It’s not the over-the-top type of joy like a loaded funnel cake or deep-fried Mars bar. Instead, their signature cream buns ($3.69 each) are delicate sweets. Think of their joy as a gentle reminder to take time out for yourself and a sly wink that it’s okay to have a small treat. The original custard version is the lightest of the bunch and tastes barely sweetened. Surely this can’t even be bad for you when the solid bun seemingly turns into pillowy air that disappears in several bites. One step sweeter is the azuki bean cream bun where the fluffy cream is laced with finely blended red bean, so you get a hint of the flavours. It’s nothing like the rich thick paste you find in other azuki products, the milky cream is still the star.I expected the matcha cream bun to the powerful with its vibrant green hue, but in Hattendo fashion, the green tea flavours were restrained. The filling did have a slight bitter finish, but so mild that if I didn’t know I was eating I wouldn’t have pegged it as being a matcha bun - there wasn’t that traditional grassiness that you get from the product. True matcha fans may be disappointed. For a real indulgence, the chocolate cream bun will taste the most decadent, with the filling having a rich chocolate mousse feeling being denser and creamier than everything else. As the heaviest of the buns, you’ll want to leave this for last if you’re having multiple buns, which isn’t a difficult task as these palm sized buns seem to disappear so quickly! Our household enjoyed the hazelnut cream bun ($4.19) the most – one of the specialty flavours for the warmer weather. A winning combination of luscious sweet cream and earthy nutty hazelnut, it had a surprisingly strong taste for something that looked so light. I also enjoyed the little bits of nut sprinkled throughout the filling that added a nice texture against all the soft elements. You can enjoy a full meal from Hattendo since they serve two savoury products as well. The tamago burger ($5) takes their cream bun and fills it was a finely chopped egg salad. Interestingly, the bun’s whole flavour and texture changes and becomes denser, sort of like a brioche hamburger bun that smells more like milk than butter. It’s tasty, but the egg salad could use a pinch more seasoning considering the thicker bun.

Delicious soft, light not overly sweet buns! I had the custard filling.Keep in mind the buns are bready, as opposed to a pastry type bun.

Beautiful looking sandwiches but tastes very ordinary.I’m not sure what I was expecting, but the egg salad sandwich tastes like the ones I make at home with de-crusted Wonder Bread, egg, Kewpie mayo. For the price, I think the bread quality could be improved.

Buns here were nice and soft. Like biting into a cloud. Not overly sweet and the creams were nicely flavoured. The amaou strawberry and the white peach were really nice additions which are not on their regular menu. The strawberry had a nice tang to it and the peach actually had little bits of peach. Delicious! At the Yorkdale location, they also have sandwiches like a tamago sandwich, which looked really sharp. But that’s for next time. Yes, there will be a next time! Service was exceptional. They tended to me really quick and got me in and out fast! Give it a shot! The best part is that we don’t have to go downtown just to get a box anymore. And soon they’ll be coming to Markham! Cannot wait!Follow me on IG for more amazing pics and content!

Ordered the matcha and red bean. The red bean was significantly better as the matcha flavour was too subtle to the point where it was a bit bland. The bun itself wasn't very moist but not dry either. For the price the quality didn't seem that great. I do recommend the red bean bun though if you are going to try.

Had this delivered. Great quick snack but the matcha latte taste really light. Like the sand which more than the custard bun!

I love the concept and novelty of this place, offering some great Japanese dessert and sandwich. Presentation wise, it looks pretty and could make a good gifts. Overall, it tasted alright, and nothing out of the ordinary. My only suggestion is for the customer service to be a little better, in particular, to be more attentive and proactive. I wasn't acknowledge or greeted when I was the only one there at that time. Another minor criticism is the price point, considering the portion size is on the smaller side compared to the price.Would I come back? Maybe, when I'm craving the desserts, but I won't go out of my way only to get this.

I like the Black Sesame Latte, not too sweet like other bubble tea places. It is a bit pricey though. The matcha bun filling tasted good. The yuzu bun tasted ok. One piece of suggestion is that in Japan they like to put their buns in refrigerator. However, in Toronto I think people are used to have their buns warm. So either warm it up when you put them on display, or hit it up per order. When I eat the buns, the touch and taste is cool so it does not communicate freshness to people. It's a culture difference not a lack of quality control. It's a learning experience when you open up a store in a different country. You might want to reflect on the local's preferences.Price is another issue. Generally speaking other premium Asian buns are about $2.3-3.2 depending on size and fillings. I think the bun should be price under $3 not $3.69. Maybe you can do a buy 1 get the other one for $2.5 or something like that.Overall I will come back for the drinks. I was looking forward to the melon buns and I hope you have those in stock the next time I visit.
