It's usually hard to find a table because the majority of them are taken up at any given time by people who are not eating. Maybe they finished their meal an hour ago, or maybe they just came to hang out and use the wifi (there is a public library two blocks away). And it can be a bit difficult to get a meal, possibly because the servers are unsure about who is there to eat and who is not.

The free lunch is open to everyone and very tasty and filling. Usually vegetarian and often gluten-free. Coffee and tea available too. A beautiful space filled with great community.

I had made an appoinent for 10h45-11am... I arrive around 10h50, i asked the older gentle man if i could grab a bite to eat b/c i seen a bunch of people eating, and i was genuinely hungry.... 8 months pregnant, so my belly obviously shows... The man told me no i couldnt grab a plate to eat because i was late, i asked him how was i late if my appoinent was between 1045-11, and i was 5 minutes late... He told me to take my ticket and go wait in line for the free groceries, i couldnt eat lunch unless i wanted to lose my groceries.... I decided to take the groceries, i get to the groceries the lady told me i have 50$ to spend... Everytime i go there i get 100$ to spend b/c i am a household of 3, 2 small children myself and im visibly pregnant, the lady who was supposed to do the grocery calculation told me its 50, she didnt care about my children, and walked off... I waited on confusion for about 5 minutes before someone else came to help me... I feel less than human, i feel so disrespected.... At this point its better to steal groceries or starve than to go back there....

The Depot Community Food Centre on Somerled Avenue in NDG promotes healthy eating, as their meals and food basket contain only healthy foods. The Depot is very well organized and staffed; some of the poorly run food charities in Montreal should send their people here to observe and take notes (looking at you, Marché Bon Accueil - Welcome Hall Mission). Whoever funds The Depot should know that their money is being incredibly well spent.

Had an absolutely lovely experience getting my first basket, fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, pasta and canned goods. It's so nice to know that this is available to the community. Everyone who was working or volunteering was super nice and welcoming. The restaurant is super cozy and warm. If you're feeling anxious at all about going, I was too but they made me feel so welcomed.
