Ethiopia was also the only black African nation that accepts and defends the Christian faith without colonial influences.Since its inception the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has been a major advocate for the moral, social, cultural, educational, artistic, architectural values to the nation. It has tirelessly fought to defend the unity of the nation and the freedom of its people for over 1500 years. Over the centuries it has been threatened by Muslin invaders sponsored by the Ottoman Empire, and Egypt, as well as colonial threats from the European nations of Portugal and Italy. Because the church has been such a resilient defender of the nation, its citizens, and traditions, it has been the constant target of outside threats that persist to this day.The church has served as the official Ministry of Education until recent years.
