Having heard a bit of hype about Mensch so I trekked into Gastown for lunch to try their pastrami sandwich. My expectations we sadly not met with the sandwich I was served. The meat was surprisingly bland, as if it had seen little pepper or salt, and was quite dry. It was underwhelming for the expense of it at $16.

Honestly, he makes a really good sandwich. But at a price approaching $20, I can't help but feel I deserve more for my money. Can I at least get some fries or chips or some sort of low-cost side dish thrown in?

Would give 2.5. Was excited for this but the meat was dry and the sandwich is just too expensive at $10 for a small. A proper Montreal style deli will give you the option of juicy" or "lean" - here its just too lean. Not much coleslaw either. Pickle was delicious though."

Yeah, I thought it was expensive, so I ordered the half size pastrami for $8.00 or something. Wonderfully delicious, and I'm gladd I didn't order the full sandwich cause I wouldn't have been able to finish it.Going back to try the reuben next. Half size, or course!

Went here when it first opened and the sandwich was good, but not great. Decided to give it another try today and have to say it was amazing. Tons of meat, warm soft bread, and appropriately hot mustard. Will be back soon.

Lovely owners, great Ruben sandwich. Prices are a bit high for a deli sandwich ($19 for a whole sandwich and small bowl of soup), but the pastrami is fantastic and the sandwich is expertly put together. Wish that there were mustard and napkins on each table.

A friend of ours goes out for brunch every Sunday and invited us on a cold and wet Vancouver day. We had been wanting to go to Mensch forever so we excitedly said, yes! I am glad I did a little online reconnaissance ahead of time because their brunch menu was not up on the chalkboard. It was on a piece of paper at the cash. I got the Breakfast Reuben (which was half a sandwich) which came with pastrami, an over easy egg, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, Dijonese sauce on rye bread for $12. I also got a side Matzah ball soup for an additional $3.There is one very long communal table that runs down the length of the restaurant and the place was pretty packed with people. My soup was seasoned perfectly but I only had one piece of carrot in it. I ate my soup as I waited for them to call our number for our order. The Reuben was delicious but I wish I could have put a regular mustard on it because the Dijon was a bit lacking for all that amazing slow brined, smoked and hand-cut hot pastrami. I love having my sandwiches dripping with mustard!I wish I could say that I liked the coleslaw and the pickle which I normally adore. The coleslaw was so one note and the pickle just tasted of white vinegar. I LOVE Kosher pickles. This is the first time I met a pickle I did not like. This is a very casual dining experience of Jewish deli food. The brunch prices are very reasonable but I was hoping for more flavour for my foodie buck. Their new Gastown location is fantastic and worth the trek in the rain. Going with friends was a blast but it is not the kind of place you eat and talk for hours. I am glad I finally got to Mensch Jewish Delicatessen. Eating there was quite the experience and that meat was pretty damn phenomenal. I liked it, am glad I went but not sure I will go again.

Proper pastrami is a hard thing to find in Vancouver but these guys are doing it right. Huge sandwich, perfect amount of mustard, hand cut. This is proper deli. Great egg salad on challah for the vegetarians. Hopefully it is sticking around

The good:Pretty great sandwich on decent bread. Awesome pickle came with it. Good mustard! Friendly staff. The not so good:$16 for a sandwich is a bit steep, especially in this neighborhood and for the size of what you get - you can get a half-size, but it'd barely be a snack. Quite slow too, but they're new so I'm sure they'll pick that up over time. Also, only half a pickle? Come on...
