Mattawa River Provincial Park

We paddled from North Bay's Turtle Lake to the town of Mattawa. The river had some great sections, though you need to go through a few lakes with lots of cottages and motor boats. Campsites are generally not maintained and not marked. Boom boxes (lavatories) are not present except for in one large campsite.One major red flag if you're planning this canoe trip is near the end at the Hurdsman Dam. The portage is terrible and dangerous, inviting injuries (which we experienced). A section of boulders needs to be crossed, and it seems there is no local authority responsible for maintaining this portage and making it safer. The result is the town of Mattawa never got our overnight business as tourists since we had to abort the trip prematurely.

Beautiful and a well kept secret. Washrooms were well maintained. Shady parking spots and plenty of picnic spots. Beach sandy and views glorious!

Nice park and very friendly staff. They helped point us in the right direction for an afternoon fishing spot

I didn't spend much time here, just passed through really. But with landscapes like what I witnessed here, I will be back with some more time for exploring. The hills and rock faces along the river are really something to behold!

Great river to paddle. Amazing views and very peaceful with some fun little rapids that are sometimes runable. Very historic canoe route

We stayed at Von Doeler’s Ranch (must experience if in this area) and canoed past the provincial park. Very beautiful area, and fun for canoeing with the river, islands, birds and lots of cottages along the river banks to check out. Can’t speak to the other aspects of the park but the river in this area is gorgeous (though lots of seaweed as it is quite shallow) and the view is beautiful.
