Amateur work, professional pricing, terrible service. The trip to Peterborough or Oshawa for a professional repair is worth the gas money.Needed to get a basic repair completed - replacement of the quartz mechanism. I originally planned to do it myself but decided to spend the $95 to have it done locally and by a professional. Bad decision. The clock returned in working order, but very poorly done. The mechanism could be fully rotated and was offset using a smorgusboard of used washers (photos attached). I reached out to Dave about these issues hoping to better understand why the repair looked the way it did. It is what it is" was the response.I took apart the clock and came to realize that the threaded shaft on the quartz movement was too long. Seems like a pretty big oversight for anyone with internet access

As this is a negative comment no doubt it will be deleted quickly, however I would not recommend Cobourg Clocks to my worst enemy. In 2005 I inherited my grandparents’ mantle clock (approx. 100 years old) when my father died. It was serviced, cleaned and oiled and a new spindle ($600) installed by a reputable Swiss trained clock smith who said it was a beautiful example of a mantle clock with Westminster chimes and 8 day movement. Unfortunately in 2015 although the clock was running beautifully the chimes stopped working correctly and I tried to contact the original technician who I learned had retired but the store recommended two alternatives, one of which was Cobourg Clocks. Dave Upton, the owner, diagnosed the problem over the phone as a minor adjustment which would take a week and cost $X.After almost 2 weeks I called and he said the clock was fixed and running fine but on pick up he told me that the clock works were a mishmash of odd parts not belonging to the clock and as the mechanism was worn out (it was running perfectly and keeping good time when delivered for service) he had replaced it with a movement he recommended be wound every 3 days. Remember, the original technician described it as “a beautiful example of a mantle clock....” He had no right or authority to exchange the mechanism without my knowledge and permission. I paid the $X and took my clock home to assess it.The pendulum and key I was given were not the ones for my clock and in fact the key slipped on a couple of turns the first time I wound the clock. The second time I wound the clock the key slipped then grabbed and the mechanism stopped working. The clock I had cherished for the last 10 years was over-wound for the very first time. The chimes sounded tinny and not the mellow sound of the originals. I emailed Mr. Upton to tell him of my dissatisfaction and his reply was aggressive and objectionable and suggested I had no right to complain that the movement and chimes had been replaced (without my permission) but reluctantly agreed to replace my original movement and replace my $X. What of the original chimes? On February 12th, my 4th trip to Cobourg, his wife handed me the clock, the key and pendulum and my refund. I realized she had given me the key and pendulum which didn’t belong to my clock and went back to the door to ask for my originals. Dave Upton came to the door and was adamant that these were from my clock, waved his finger in my face and said he had had enough of me and my clock and to get out! I didn’t expect to deal with a bully.Let us assume he re-installed the original 8 day movement as promised, however, my original chimes had 4 strikers, my clock was returned with chimes which have 5 strikers. He assured me in his email that the chimes would work, but not correctly, however they do not work at all. I firmly believe that once I complained I was doomed and that my original chimes received that minor adjustment and are now merrily chiming with mellow tones in someone else’s home, the original pendulum installed and my key beside the clock.
