Tilley Endurables
UPDATE: Apparently there will be hats at some point in the future. “We’ll get there,” I’ve been told.Let me say I do love this brand and usually am seen wearing a Tilley every day, as I own five for across the seasons. Great company with a tested guarantee for life promise, which is superb. I was lucky enough to go to their original store in East York before the pandemic did them in, great clothing for people who love to get outside. So needless to say, I was more than a little excited for this place to open. They’ve really missed the mark with what this store could have been and have instead gone for a cold, super-minimalist concept that isn’t at all welcoming (or what this brand used to be). I understand they’re going for a new, younger demographic and pushing the bougie fashion idea on Ossington with the “inspired by life outdoors” slogan, but I think they went overboard with this plan. Instead of having a true hybrid of fashion and rugged wear, they’ve leaned too far into the former and lost sight of the latter. They have two rooms to shop in, and both are extremely bare. They’ve just opened so I understand they’re playing it by ear, but why not have your super minimalist, “clean” looking design upfront and then have some more product and various sizes in the back so people can try on some clothing? Having to rely on an employee to help you, that’s such a pain. I do understand them choosing to do this spartan vibe to display their new clothing, all of which does look very nice and I’m sure is well-made, but if you’re shopping for a hat…Wait, where ARE the hats? They only had their T1 bucket and T3 Wanderer in various colours laid out on a shelf, plus a few other new experimental designs that’ll likely just end up discounted and discontinued in a few months if people don’t buy them… And just one size for all. Again, you’d need to ask for your size to try one on. None of their classics, no hat trees to dig through and maybe have a laugh while trying one on. Not a single Airflo in sight! I was told by an associate to look online. So hold on, this storefront isn’t any good to anyone looking to shop for a Tilley hat, which is what this brand used to be known for, and instead I need to go online? What good is it to have a ton of options on your website but then have basically none physically in store? …Okay?Shopping for a hat online kinda sucks, I’ll say it plainly. It’s not shoes, it’s not pants, it’s not something where you know what you’re after and if you choose the right size that you’ll be all set. Hat shopping can be a more personal experience, you’re looking for something to put on your head that compliments your face. You want to try a few different options on and see what goes “a-ha” to you. The old store in East York was great for that, and I was looking forward to being able to do that here instead of somewhere like MEC where the options can be slim and there’s hats strewn about with zero organization. That this storefront didn’t offer that whatsoever was a total letdown. Also I’ll quickly add, I’ve purchased a hat from Tilley online in the past and even though I ordered the same size as my other one, had to ship it back at my own expense to get a size down. They’ve done a lovely job of fixing the place up from the beloved (and dearly missed!) dive bar it used to be, and the staff seemed very pleasant if not a little lost for things to do. But I left feeling more than a bit let-down, and I’ll be surprised to see if this store lasts very long on a street where you see businesses come and go all the time.Side note: I happened to pass by an older gentleman asking a sales associate if they were going to be getting in any of their “really good t-shirts”. You could tell he was looking for something to replace what he’s had in the past. I felt sadness for him, he’s still thinking that they’re the Tilley they used to be with excellent, all Canadian-made product designed for outdoor usage. Unfortunately, that Tilley appears to be long-gone.

10/10 Phenomenal store, all the way from the staff being super knowledgeable/friendly to the layout/clothing in the amazing space just off Ossington Ave and Queen St.Knowing this Canadian company for a while I was determined to get a specific hat (the T3) and came in to the store to test hat sizes so I'd know what to buy either there or online depending on what stock/colours were available in store. After walking in I was greeted and shown where the hats I wanted were located and was helping me with the sizing. Luckily they had the hat colour and size I wanted and I was set to go!..That being said, I had a whole store of insanely cool clothing/products so I did what any rational person would do and look/try on new clothing I was interested in. After some time I ended up just getting the T3 in the Olive colour and got a free sunscreen with my purchase!I am so happy I was able to try them out and see what looked good on me, figuring out the sizing as its ALWAYS best to check products in store if you've never had one/tried one from them before (at any clothing store).I will definitely be coming back again in the future, so until then I will continue to enjoy the hat I bought for many years to come!
