Fort Calgary
Very picturesque place - just to walk, see around, enjoy the view to the river and river park. You can see the tableaux with the information about the Fort and significant persons from history. Not sure if it is open (as the map stated “closed”), but we saw the group of kids with the teacher who entered the door “School excursions”.All in all - we wanted to see it as we were close to it. If you are at this location, take a look!

Fort Calgary is a very rich and informative museum located at the heart of Calgary. I am a very museum enthusiast person who never miss a chance to visit the museums when touring a new town/city, and I can guarantee you that this is one of the best museum in all of Canada. The museum highlights the core foundation of Calgary, as how this city was built, starting from community, which includes the first nations and then how the settlers came in and established new businesses through out the city. It also showcases the artifacts and stuffs those are connected with the two World Wars, where a lot of people from this city took part and the museum displays their stories and roles towards the city and the country during and after the war. Please never miss the chance to visit this museum if you are visiting Calgary. If you are some one who takes interest in history and loves getting lost in the past then this the place for you. Their admission rate is also very reasonable compared to other museums in the city.

We went through because of the PowWow on Canada Day. It was so nice to see the PowWow for real. We only know it from TV. I like the traditional dance.

The confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers has been a place of significance to Indigenous peoples since long before 1875, when the North West Mounted Police established a site of colonial occupation called Fort Calgary and prepared the way for a new settler-colonial community. This place remains significant to Indigenous peoples today and Fort Calgary National Historic Site now strives to provide the space and opportunity to reflect on the past and help create better paths for our futures.

Relatively small museum, it can be visited thoroughly in 2-3 hours.Besides the information related to the fort and the historical facts strictly related to it, the aim seems to touch on the story of the different communities and how these intertwined with the mainstream narrative. The info about the Treaty is really moving, I wish they will expand it further in the future. The audio guide if useful and could be extended maybe… on the contrary, the podcasts are a bit too long and dispersive as they were not entirely tailored for the purpose. All in all an interesting experience!

It was smaller than I expected. The kids need to be a little older to understand of course. The best part was the childhood back then section. It was very interesting to see.

We did the true crime walking tour and it was a blast! I always forget how little I know if Calgary's history and how fascinating it is when I do learn a tidbit. In the case of this tour, it was end of October at twilight. Fair warning: it gets cold as the sun goes down. Dress appropriately. Calgarians should know this but a surprising number had not dressed adequately so they were getting cold by the end.I hadn't thought to arrive early to enjoy the museum, but I would recommend that you do because I recall it being interesting. I hadn't realized that our tour tickets might get us in (I'm not certain if they do, but it's worth asking).
