Statue of Our Lady of Saguenay
This golden gilded statue is truly a big, beautiful and magnificent monument perched thousands of feet high on the steep wall of Cape Trinity, overlooking the Saguenay River. Apparently it's made of white pine, covered with thin sheets of lead to protect it from the harsh weather and is 9 meters high and weighs more than 3 tons. The statue was commissioned by Charles Robitaille a traveling salesman who in 1878 after falling through the frozen Saquenay and unable to pull himself from the freezing water onto the ice, prayed that the Blessed Virgin Mary would save him and after he miraculously survived, he decided to create a statue in her honour. In 1881 Robitaille commissioned Louis Jobin to create the statue sculpted in the image of Our Lady of Lourdes. It must have been extremely difficulty to haul such a huge statue into place in the late nineteenth century. Since its erection in 1881, the statue has become a regional landmark. Against the background of and standing out from the evergreen trees, the statue, like a beacon, glows a brilliant white high up Cape Trinity. It became known as Notre-Dame du Saguenay. Hiking to it is about an hour's walk through the magnificent Saguenay Fjord National Park.

It was a 4 hour trail to complete. Some parts of the trail were easy and hard. Bring bug spary and lots of wart with you depending on the weather.

The hike is arduous as it includes a >1000 foot increase in elevation. But.... it's worth it! Being at the foot of the statue with the scenic outlooks is awe-inspiring. The story behind 'Our Lady' is one to behold.

To get to this place we had to go on a 3.5 km intermediate hike on one side. We will be able to see the beautiful view of the large lake view surrounded by the mountains. One time experience which one should do in Saguenay national park

Its a great hike but not difficult. Next to statue there is place to sit down and relax on the rock and enjoy the view. Although its not the highest point to view the Fjord but still worth coming to the statue and relaxing there for a while. The walk to statue is amazing as there are some amazing view point on the way.

The hike was great, but the statue is not that impressive despite its history being quite interesting. The landscape around it is beautiful, the area is clean and the spot is nice to hang around for a bit.
