I went to the Hive for Japanese hair straightening. My natural hair is not curly; it is voluminous and coarse. I spent 3 hours in the salon, and the straightening went well. However, after my first hair wash 2 days after, I noticed my hair was no longer straight and smooth, but I didn't go back to the salon right away because I thought my hair was just dry and needed some TLC. I did lots of hair masks and used lots of hair repair oil, but my hair still had a lot of flyaways and was voluminous. One month later, my hair has returned to its original state - voluminous and coarse. Japanese hair straightening is supposed to be permanent. Just look at the photo below (taken 3 weeks after straightening). Did I look like I just had my hair straightened ?!I am giving the salon 3 stars as of now because the place was clean, the people were friendly, and they have scheduled me to see my stylist again when she returns from vacation. I'll update you on how that goes...

Got my hair done 2 days ago and it was a nightmare! When I called in for my appointment I mentioned to them what I wanted done and they said it will take a while because they had to bleach my hair. I was fine with that because I knew it will be a long process. When I got there my stylist told me I am booked only for 2 hours and they can only do the first bleaching. I told them to reschedule me because I want it all done in the same day. I had already spoke to the person who called me to book the appointment. I told them I do not want to waste my time going back and forth. She insisted I do my first session and then come back a week later to complete. So I said ok....my first session took about 2 hours and my second session took almost 3 hours. After 5 hours of my time the color did not even come close! How could they even let me walk out of the salon knowing they messed up my hair. What is that chunk of black in the back..they couldn't even blend it. I didn't notice that part until I got home and few hours later cause I didn't even want to look at my hair in the mirror because it was depressing. Thinking back they didn't even show me a 360 of my hair like all stylist do after a cut/color..because they knew they messed up! My sister called in and complain and demanded they fix it at no charge and guarantee it will come out right. They said yes but when we called back they left us on the phone for a while and we can hear them having a conversation about it..they couldn't guarantee so we called the manager at the Broadway location. He was busy so the counter took down my name and number and asked that the phone call is in regards to. We told them and they said they would call back...never heard from them. NOT PROFESSIONAL!! NEVER GOING BACK HERE AGAIN!

Very happy with my experience here ☺ Reasonably priced for great service, no hidden fees, and very friendly staff. I usually have a hard time trying out new places (trust issues, issues communicating in the past with stylists who didn't speak fluent English), but my stylist was very competent and it was easy to communicate exactly what I wanted to him. Their promo for first time visitors was very generous and made the experience even better! Will be coming again soon :)

My sister did a hair cut and we both did a 60 mins hair treatment.Hidden costThe hair dresser recommended me a 60 mins hair treatment which would cost $65 and I agreed to it. It ended up $105 without any explanation. I kept asking about the additional cost, they told me they used different brand.Inconsistent qualityMy sister did a haircut (about 20 mins) then the 60 mins hair treatment, she didn't get charged $105 for hair treatment but her hair treatment finished same time as me, it has been shortened to 40 mins.We chose Hive Hair Spa (Richmond) because we read the positive google review but what we experienced, was the total opposite. This salon either charged you extra or shorten your treatment time. Not recommended.

Took my 15yr old to get a hair cut and the stylist was excellent. Very detailed and can cater the hair style to fit the face even though my daughter showed a picture of a hairstyle that may not have fit her face exactly. Good job!
