Lola's Hooked Rugs

Quel endroit magnifique! Le savoir-faire des femmes qui créent les tapis est un art qui risque de se perdre puisque très peu de jeunes s’y intéressent. Les femmes qui créent les œuvres le font depuis plus de 40 ans pour la plupart. Il est possible de voir leur photo à l’entrée du magasin et chaque pièce est identifiée. Allant du petit cercle de 3 po de diamètre aux grandes œuvres de plusieurs pieds, les prix et les styles sont très variés. Il y en a pour tous les goûts et tous les budgets.Yvette, la dame qui nous a accueilli, a pris le temps de nous faire une démonstration et de nous expliquer l’histoire de la tradition des «hooked rugs ». Elle était très chaleureuse et généreuse de son temps. Nous avons appris que cet art a déjà été une entreprise lucrative pour la communauté de Chéticamp.C’est un incontournable pour en apprendre davantage sur l’histoire et la culture du village!

Nova Scotia is known for hooked rugs and weaving. Lola’s supports locals who create these art pieces. They offer a wonderful colorful selection of quality made goods. Do stop in as you tour Cheticamp! They know so much about rug patterns and helped me with questions about a 1957 design my grandmother hooked. Kits available too!

Lola’s Hooked Rugs has some really amazing handicrafts. Made by women in their 70s to 90s, it’s really a dying art. You can see the differences in each artists work and we were hard pressed to stop at two pieces for ourselves and three as gifts. They also sell hooked rug kits, which we also purchased as well as tools and wool. The woman working when we were there was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the pieces and those who made them as well as the art itself - she paused working on a piece herself to help us. Couldn’t recommend more.

Lola’s shop is chock full of beautiful local hooked rugs. Pieces range from small to large for every price range. The rugs are so unique and colourful and Lola is a charming ambassador for the art form. Many of the artisans are in their 80’s. Visit Lola for a demonstration, a smiling face and a piece of Acadian culture to take home. We really enjoyed our visit and have some nice souvenirs.

You had me at kits!But I came out with some hooked rugs as well. Great shop and helpful friendly staff.
