Yesterday, while shopping at Cioffi’s meats in Burnaby Heights with my mother, we saw this packaged haggis in the shape of a Penguins body, and given the label, we assumed this was some sort of exotic meat trade. I explained this to my fiance this morning over coffee, and he said there was absolutely no way this existed. A debate ensued, family members weighed in. My fiance called Cioffi’s and asked if they sold penguin meat, to which they actually put us on hold to double check, and we were then told that no, they didn’t think they did. Unsatisfied with this vague response, we drove 20 minutes from Coquitlam to Burnaby and much to my delight (and truthfully, dismay) I found the little penguin shaped haggis body right where I’d seen it the day before. My fiancé was speechless. I was victorious. Until I asked someone working at Cioffi’s - who assured us that it was just regular haggis that had been sold and manufactured by Penguin Meats Supply Co in Surrey. Apparently this miscommunication happens all the time. While I realize that imported penguin meat from Antarctica is both illegal and illogical, I would like to thank this company for the creative and slightly alarming choice in name, and also for creating the space for us to spend 1 hour of our day researching Penguin Haggis.
