Tamihi Rapids Recreation Site

Good campsite for a hot day as the water is ice cold. No privacy as the campsite is on the road and all sites are very open. Had people walking through our campsite, helping themselves to our camping gear when we weren't looking... didn't feel safe at all. One disgusting outhouse for all sites that has never been cleaned. Caretaker is creepy and authoritarian, visiting our campsite multiple times, inserting himself into whatever we doing.June 21st 2023Updating my review to reflect my second visit. I can’t say enough how awful our visit was due to the lack of organization and professionalism amongst the camp hosts.

Care takers not the most pleasant ambassadors for the site. Actual kind of authoritarian. Don't know why one would pay $17 or more a night to sleep on the roadside of a busy road. lol. Any where else that would be free. Apparently this site is camping over night only. No day use allowed.

Great little spot just off the side of the road. There's one outhouse for the 5-6 sites, sites are $15 a night, and there's limited spots. A little noisy with traffic being so close by, but the sound of the river right next to you is a nice background noise

A great place, if you're accustomed to a more barebones camping experience.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed with our experience at this site. We had planned the trip weeks in advance and communicated a change of dates with response from the company. When we arrived they had given away our double site to another family. We waited hours for them to try to resolve the problem. In the end they forced a large extended family to move their stuff and squeeze into one site and only gave us one site. They also expected us to then be camped next to the family that was upset their trip had been ruined too. Ultimately the trip itself was fine, we wasted half a day and were squished into a smaller site. Then, they wouldn't refund us for either of the two campsites we had booked even though we didn't even get to use one! Would never go back here.

It was a spontaneous we so it and good thing they had spots available the stars where incredible the sound of the rapid currents beautiful nature

It's okay place to stop and watch the kayakers or have a little bonfire. Not much else. It's right off the main road so lots of road noise if you were to camp there. No playground, outhouses, picnic tables available.

Great spot for a 1 or 2, maybe even 3 day camping trip. It's nice because it's not too far out of the city, but it's far enough that you don't have to deal with a lot of people. The campsites themselves are relatively big and it's definitely worth going.
