We found this place by sheer accident! And it is so worth discovering. As clueless US citizens we lost track of those escaping on the Underground Railroad after they crossed the border. Chatham, it turns out is one of the important places they went. The museum celebrates that community and its heritage. The displays do an excellent job of summarizing founders, recognizing talents, and describing troubles. There's a great story about the baseball team. And the walking tour was super informative and answered so many questions--even some that were off topic. Wish I could give you all 6 stars.

It is amazIng what you can learn at this museum in about an hour, about a history of people not in main stream educational and history books. The true history offered here dispels myths and makes you more curious about the past and creates a backdrop for the present. It is a proud history that a few proudly protect, preserve, and kindly share in this quaint museum.

What a hidden gem in the Chatham community. A gold mine of valuable information. With such friendly, and knowledgeable staff members, and volunteers one could easily spend weeks in this place. With the most organized archives I’ve seen in my museum experiences, this place is truly an anchor in the Chatham Community.

Great little Museum. The Walking Tour is a great addition. Unfortunately the city is good at tearing down old buildings however it is very interesting to see where things were and envision old Chatham. They also have a BIG family history collection which is awesome for those who love genealogy, students and researchers. The staff is very knowledgeable, extremely friendly and if they didn’t know an answer they would look it up to find out the correct information. VERY well organized research centre.Definitely recommend visiting here.

We had the pleasure of doing the full tour with Mrs. Wright on Friday afternoon. It was such a pleasure to learn about black history in Chatham-Kent. We were transported back in time and brought up to present day with information, personal stories and a walking tour around the downtown area. This tour was so powerful and Mrs.Wright was a reminder of the beauty, strength and courage of the African diaspora in Canada. Highly recommended.
