Red Bay is where Basque whalers came to hunt whales. They set up their camps and workshops on saddle island which you can visit. Make sure to wear a coat, it can be VERY cold. While visiting the island the bay had a visitor from Spain! Everybody was very friendly. Just watch out for the giant birds.

Really enoyed the interpretive Center. There was 3 floors of info. Top floor is more of a viewing area. Parks Canada so has booklets and prizes for kids. Boat taxi included which takes you over to saddle island. Price to get in was $25 for 2 adults. Our kids are free. Can use your discovery pass here. Boat ride is included in your ticket. We spent an hour on the island hiking around. We really enjoyed this stop even in the rain.

Unique and informative. Rare insight into 400-500 year old history of whaling.

Excellent work on capturing the history of the Basques whaling history. Although is a small place the history of the area is immense. Be sure to also visit the reconstruction of the whale bones found in the bay. This is located in the local community hall just up the street. Gives you a real sense of how large these wonderful whales really are in size. The vistas around that coast and the beaches are spectacular!!!

Highly recommend this stop! A lovely place with a lot of history packed in. Plus the view of the Bay from the deck is great. You can use your parks Canada Discovery Pass" for entry if you have one. It took us a little over an hour to go through and explore/read each area."

Nice little bay to explore. Great area to take pictures of the Newfoundland area. But what out for the black flies!! They swarm you and they do bite!

The site showcases the history of 16th century Basque whaling in the Labrador Straits. The drive along the south Labrador coast to get to the site is stunning.

This whole village is a living museum without the castle gates. You can see the main centres in half a day, but much better to allow a couple of days to walk the surrounding hills in search if Captain Kidd's lost treasure. Only one restaurant/bar/shop but very warm and welcoming.
