Ministers Island, The Summer Estate of Sir William Van Horne
We very much enjoyed learning about Van Horne, life at the estate in its heyday (some Sundays they couldn't get to church because of the tides!), and efforts to save and restore the estate. Volunteer guides were great. Definitely worth a visit if you're in St. Andrews.

This place is living history surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. We did the 4 km perimeter trail today for the 2nd time this summer. I can't wait to do the full 7km this Fall !!

Amazing history and legacy. By happen stance discovered this hidden gem. Crossed by vehicle when the tide is low. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

A unique spot steeped in history and natural landscapes. As this is a tidal island, it's only accessible by land during certain times of the day. You can find those tide times easily on the site. We walked over, but if you decide to drive over close to when the tide first ebbs, make sure to stay more so to the left hand side as the ground is still quite wet and loose. Whether you're walking or driving, you need to wait in line and pay the entrance fee which we thought was expensive at first, but not after leaving. We walked the island and it took pretty much the entire time from low to about a half hour or so from high tide. It's surprisingly large and there are many well marked trails. To see the main sites if you're short on time, just follow the trails up the centre of the island and then circle back right. The tour guides that peppered certain areas were very friendly, helpful and truly enjoyed the history they were explaining to us which always lends itself to a more exciting experience. The grounds and buildings are so carefully maintained, you can also tell the people handling it care about the site.

What a special place! My wife and I only had a couple hours to enjoy Ministers Island, so we decided to walk the perimeter trail around the island. It was gorgeous! Although it seemed like there were a lot of cars in the island, we only encountered 6 people while walking the trail. It's well worth the $17 fee per person to enter the island (fee is the same whether you walk, bike, or drive).

To start with just telling your friends you drove on the ocean floor is cool enough. The history of the main house was very interesting, its worth touring the rooms upstairs (some Canadian Railway history). Also the view from the bathhouse is stunning. Don't forget to bring your hiking shoes as there are lots of trail on the island.

This was neat to drive across the bar and see the Van Horne Estate's buildings. We went back in the evening to take pictures with the tide up.We didn't have time to do any trails. If I'm ever back this way I'll cross as soon as possible to have time to hike some trails.

This is one of the most enjoyable places I have visited. A leisurely 2.5 hours took everything in. Helpful guides are everywhere. A brief introduction every 1/2 hour at the main house and barn. No need to delay your start, the introduction explains a lot of what you see in the meantime.I decided not to take our Miata, which proved to be a good decision. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have got past the start of the beach.
