Chris came the very next day to assess the damage. He finished the project on time on budget and was a pleasure to do business with. SJS (Chris Hirt) came to our rescue after our previous general contractor for our new build neglected to waterproof our foundation and over-excavated the space for the garage. After interviewing numerous excavators, we decided to hire SJS because Chris was very professional, set expectations, and actively tried to help us. Chris set realistic timelines and followed through.Chris removed the backfill to our foundation, cleaned the ICF, and applied the waterproof membrane followed by backfilling with the correct aggregate. Similarly, he helped us troubleshoot a more cost-effective way to fill the over-excavated space for us to build the garage that we needed.Chris also designed, sourced, and installed our septic system. Our previous contractor had poorly designed a system that had the pipe between the septic tank and leaching bed travel under the driveway. Chris designed a system that avoided this issue and had the entire system, with a secondary unit, installed in less than two weeks.All along, Chris kept our site orderly and clean. He went above and beyond by cleaning up the construction rubbish left by the previous contractor's crew, problem-solved with us on how to build the garage.Moreover, SJS's costs were transparent, we were given reasonable estimates that did go over simply because more material (primarily aggergate) was required to repair the issues.We highly recommend SJS and their work demonstrated the value of finding a skilled professional. There are just two additional pieces of work left for SJS to complete, which we will write a separate review for when completed.

We hired SJS Construction and Excavation to complete the concrete pad for our garage and crawl space, and trench 325 feet for a buried hydro line. Chris and his team were very professional and easy to work with because Chris explained what he would do, helped us troubleshoot, gave us realistic timelines, and communicated.Chris set our concrete to be delivered on a Wednesday, which he communicated to us about 1.5 weeks out. He told us that the concrete for the crawl space will be in that day “no matter what,” which was such a relief to us because we needed that pad in place for the other services (HVAC, etc.) to get installed. Wednesday turned out to be the first day of winter, calling for snow squalls. Chris and his team arrived at our site the day before to prepare, by pumping out the water from our crawl space, making sure the subfloor insulation pads were in place, and set up a tarp over the garage area that was already partially framed.True to his word, the concrete pads got poured and were poured very well.The following days Chris and his team trenched 325 feet, which included crossing a farm road, working with our electricians to lay the conduit for an underground hydro line. Chris did all the trenching in one day save the road crossing and went out of his way to personally inform the 2 houses down the street that the farm road will be trenched the next day and offered solutions for the residences on how to cross, if needed.Chris backfilled and graded the trench expertly. There is something to be said when a county inspector who was an excavator compliments how Chris left the farm road in better condition than before.Jackie manages the finance side of SJS and was equally professional and easy to work with - the invoices are detailed and transparent.We recommend SJS without any reservations.
