KEEP DRIVING... The place was empty and I had to get up and asked a server to give me water and I menu. The food is outrageously priced. Very small portions. The food was so dry and bland I had to chase everything down with ketchup and water.they want $15 for 3 pierogies with a bit of sour cream .

The place is a little old. But it's a decent place to eat and they have good food. If you like Mennonite food, they have really good cottage cheese perogies and Mennonite sausage. What I really like is that you can buy the sausage is frozen packages so you can take it home with you. Really good for breakfast.

I generally consider myself a bit of a foodie and relatively well informed when it comes to restaurants as I've been in the business for most of my life (almost 22 years) and been the boss at more than a few restaurants that have done well under my leadership. However, none of that prepared me for J&S, and I don't say that in a good way. First, let us talk about atmosphere...or in this case, lack thereof. The two young ladies working the counter were friendly and very polite, dressed in their J&S company shirts, the happily greeted me as I came through the door and continued conversation throughout the process of me ordering and waiting for said order to be completed, but that was as far as anything pleasant goes. The place is seriously outdated, I understand it's a trucker stop basically, but come on, the place looks like it hasn't been changed since the 1940's or cleaned since with dust particles rampant in the air and dirt buildup in the corners where the floor meets the walls, I didn't venture to the washrooms, but I shudder to think of what might lurk there. The dining area looks like one of the all purpose rooms you find in almost every hotel that are used for meetings and conferences, only converted into a poorly laid out buffet area with some tables and booths randomly added in. It is very dark and not very inviting looking. The older lady working in the kitchen didn't help much. She scowled and muttered to herself adding to the inclination that she would literally rather be anywhere else but there or that she really didn't appreciate my order. Either one isn't a good thing. Anyway, my order was simple enough. I ordered the Trucker Burger, lettuce wrapped with a side salad. I was informed that both the lettuce wrap for my burger and the side salad would be extra charges. Now, I'll stop there for a minute. Any other restaurant I've ever been to offers a salad choice as a side with a regular garden salad being the equivalent to fries and a Ceasar or Greek salad being an additional charge, I've never been charged for not wanting fries. Anyway, the lettuce wrap for the burger really bothered me. There is no way what amounted to two pieces of lettuce cut into four and sandwiched around my burger cost you more than a bun. So why was I charged an additional fee? I guess I'll never know. J&S is clearly against healthy eating. Regardless, I paid for my order which came to about $23 and change with my small coffee (cost me 2.93 for a cup the size of a Tim Hortons small) and I have to admit, I'm actually really disappointed that a burger, side salad, and coffee cost me that much. However, I was told the quality was decent for the price so maybe there was still hope...there was not. I got home, opened my salad first and well, it was a paltry salad to say the least, especially for the extra charge, very basic which is what you'd expect for a garden salad, but very disappointing nonetheless. Now here's the fun part, the burger...big reveal...major dissatisfaction. So the burger was placed between literally 4 small pieces of lettuce, there was one patty which was maybe a 5 oz patty, it was very clearly store bought, not made in house and that was obvious not only by looking at it, but tasting it as well. On top of said patty, was two strips of bacon, some processed cheddar (or American cheese if you will) one slice of tomato, 3 pickles, way too much onion to even detail, some more shredded lettuce, and a fried egg. All of which might have been okay, except the egg was over cooked, as in, it was a literal fried egg completely cooked through. As anyone in the food industry can tell you, if you're going to put an egg on a burger you want it over easy or poached at the very most, part of the purpose to placing an egg on a burger is the sensation of the yoke breaking as you bite into the burger and saturating the beef with an amazing combination of flavor and texture. This was not the case here. Regardless, because of their culinary shortcomings, high costs, bad flavor profiles, and poor overall setup, J&S you fail!

Very basic cooking. I ordered the chef's salad and it basically were a bunch of ingredients (most of them clearly from cans) put on a plate with a few servings of also pre-packed sauce. My wife's burger was also mediocre.I can understand that getting fresh ingredients may not be easy in a place like Vanderhoof, but then prices should be lower. The noise from the kitchen was distracting even though we were at the other end of the large dining hall. They do not serve alcohol. In all, I definitely recommend skipping this place and continuing on your way to someplace better.

Got chicken nuggets with poutine. It was all prepackaged processed food. I could have spent the same money at KFC and had real chicken and a good meal. This was gross. Their breakfast is good. Also got the roast beef dinner. It didn't have much flavour and the potatoes tasted more like instant powder potatoes then real. Very disappointed. Our waitress was friendly and well mannered and we did enjoy her.

Very nice diner-style place. They have always been really good with us and the food has come pretty quickly. I gave a 4-star review only because this last time round they must have had an OFF night as there was hair in my BLT. But, that isn't the norm so, overall, pretty great place for a smaller town.

I came here on a day I was sick so wasn't able to venture out and try different things on the menu. But I did get their soup and salad combo and it was pretty fulfilling. I got the borscht which tasted nice and homemade and the greek salad, which is hard to get wrong. The service was also pretty good as the server was very nice and friendly. Overall, a good experience.

Prompt, friendly service. The food is tasty, and there is a big menu. Nice dessert menu as well, this place does everything; pies, cakes, muffins, ice cream and more. This environment is very family friendly. No beer though, oh well :)

Main course was good but fries and onion rings were not fresh, only from frozen. I think they have a good opportunity to be really good if they kept everything fresh.Really good service!
