One of the top Indigenous cultural centres I’ve ever been. Up there with the Haida in Sandspit. Amazing First Nation pieces presented in a stunning space. Moving. Sad. Beautiful. Educational. It’s all there. Highly recommend visiting it.

We learned so much about the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw people through thoughtful exhibits. The Potlatch collection is world class, the regalia and masks are a must-see.

The tribe has collected all their ceremonial masks and some garb to put on display. There are some very old pieces from pre-European contact and more recently made. There is an excellent hands on room where can touch some items and wear masks. A couple of videos demonstrate how the costumes are used and you can even play a log from along with the music. A few pieces were missing while we there, replaced by a sign saying that the owner was currently using them in a dance. Very cool place.

Tragically Beautiful. Indigenous Nation rising from extended impact of Residential School. Entire history captured in a cultural centre which rivals the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. While the fishery will never recover to its glory days in the 60's ... the First Nation is on the rise. Wish I could spend a month there. Wow.

I was very impressed with the variety of masks and the way in which they’ve built the centre to allow people to not have to see everything behind glass. They’ve done an excellent job of sharing about culture and also sharing about oppression and how it impacted their peoples.I’ll always be grateful to Jessica took the time to share some stories and show me through the centre. Its a moving place but especially moving to meet someone from the community who is willing to share.

The U'mista Cultural Center was an unexpected treasure on such a remote island. It shares the story of revitalizing culture, which was lost for some time through European contact. You'll feel welcome and engaged as you experience what few people have had the opportunity to be part of.

This place was absolutely unreal! Humbling, educating, and absolutely worth the stop. I feel so grateful that we took the time to come here, and the community has created such a wonderful place to learn about their culture! I look forward to returning again, and having a chance to continue to learn, and teach my daughter.

An amazing culture experience! Canadians must see and educate themselves on their pasted history for a greater understanding on the road of reconciliation. The historical timeline presented inside is well presented. Or visit the exibition on line.

Amazing Potlatch Collection. Very interesting to learn about the different masks and dances. I would highly recommend going on a Saturday so you can experience the museum AND purchase the T'sasala Dancers ticket who perform at 1pm. (Performances are only available summer July and August)
