Located along highway 2 between Gananoque and Kingston is this amazing locally owned and operated nursery. As their name suggests, perennials are the name of the game here, and they do offer an outstanding selection of shade loving and shade tolerant plants, all specially selected for growing in Eastern Ontario. I am SO. HAPPY. to have found this place, and suspect they will get a lot of repeat business from me. Lynn, daughter of founder Laura who still lives on site, answered many questions we had - explaining how to care for certain plants, what to do with Yucca spikes, how to remain zen in the presence of mosquito frenzies etc. I had a feeling she would have been happy to chat plants all day, and clearly knew her stuff. She helped us select some new plants to bring home (in my photo all the potted plants except the Annabelle Hydrangea on the far right was purchased from MITS), and told us about the Eastern Ontario Hosta Society. Cannot have had a better visit, and wholeheartedly recommend this place for any local gardiner on the hunt for less typical perennial plants. Some of the nicest rose plants I have seen in all of Eastern Ontario are available for sale here, many less common hosta varieties, and tons more - all grown on site. Open 7 days a week from late April until late October.

My favorite nursery by far! Excellent plant selection, including over 100 hosta varieties, expert advice and the most beautiful nursery to walk through. I've found unique additions each visit. On my last visit, Lynn, one of the owners, took the time to help me find the exact type of plants I was looking for. She even offered up advice on house plants too. Getting these invaluable expert tips from Lynn's warm and funny demeanor is a huge bonus! Give yourself some time to enjoy and gain inspiration from the incredible gardens throughout the nursery, as you shop. You won't regret it!

This year visit was our second time going there. In both cases, we were happy, satisfied with a pocket a little lighter than before.The owner is super nice. We’re going there next year too. There were plants, roses, trees, and etc.

Really nice spot with a lot of plants I haven’t seen elsewhere. There were also quite a few native species to choose from. I recommend this place to anyone looking for perennials, but as the name implies they have a great selection of shade loving/shade tolerant varieties, which aren’t always easy to find at other places.

HIGHLY, highly, highly recommend! I can’t even begin to describe how much I love Made in the Shade and why they are the best place to go for plants. They have the best selection of hostas and peonies I have ever seen. I am in love with their mini hostas and want to collect them all. The peonies are just gorgeous, and you can get rare plants for 30-50% what you would pay for a designer root in a catalogue. Plus, at the end of the summer, the peonies go on sale! I mean, where else can you buy such gorgeous peonies for such prices!?You can also do curbside, which is super amazing if you want to place larger orders or if you are in my boat and have a kiddo who won’t put up with your garden shopping. It is so easy to place an order via email; my items are always ready to go when I arrive. Plus, MIS will order items for fall planting -- the selection of alliums is incredible and they helped me pick out some super neat Fritillaria that I am excited to try.But I would have to say that the best part of Made in the Shade is the people! Lynn and Laura (and everyone who works there) are so kind and helpful. As a new gardener, I am so grateful that they take the time to explain how to care for the plants I am buying and that they are also willing to suggest plants or solutions for my gardens. If it weren’t for them, I would think shade gardening is just hostas. Now I have cool things like Golden Ray-the Rocket (so fun!), Turtleheads, silver mirror brunnera, Jack Frost, and stunning Japanese Forest Grass….. and that is just for starters! I basically get gorgeous plants at a steal of a price, plus free landscaping advice, and fun conversation / garden tours.I just love Made in the Shade and highly recommend it to friends and locals all of the time. My favorite place to shop and just visit <3
