It was a rainy day when we visited but fascinating nonetheless! I’d read about the history and construction of the canal, locks and dams so was eager to see part of this engineering marvel in person. There are washrooms on site which I really appreciated!

Great historic place to visit. Very peaceful and scenic. In the summer months lots if boat and lift lock activity, which is very fun to watch. There is a rock climbing spot, as well as fishing spot. Great for family and kids.

Fascinating to see how the locks work. A great place for a picnic and also fishing (there were a lot of people fishing on the dock across the street).

Great place to explore the age old locking mechanism, enjoy the sitting in park and interacting with other people. Getting to know the methods behind the wheel from expert who work there. The Kingston Mills area has a nice little park with tables, washrooms and a ferry ride (owned) to give you an experience of the Rideau Canal. On the other side of road you can sit an enjoy a nice barbecue, fishing experience along with a small trail to explore.Great parking space, and a good spot to spend a couple of hours in peace.Fun for kids to explore, and lucky if they get to see the train passing iver the bridge.

Just 100 meter east of the Locks is the generating station at Kingston Mills. It sits on the edge of Colonel By Lake. In 1914, on the site of an old grist mill, a new hydroelectric plant was constructed by Gananoque Light & Power. The plant was originally constructed with one turbine, Unit #1 was considered the “workhorse of the company” and continues to generate electricity today. Two major expansions occurred, one in 1926 saw the installation of an additional generator which was later upgraded in 1971, at the same time as a third expansion took place with a third generator energized in 1975 increasing the output of the station to 2.2 MW.
