Selkirk Seniors Village

The care in this home is disgusting. The social worker never even came to see my loved one when he was placed in this home. She never bothered to see him when he left for another home. She is useless. She never returns phone calls . Don't know where she received her degree but she should not be in this field of work. The nurses are too busy with their daily reports to even bother to come and see a resident when they are clearly in need. Stay away from this place - never send your loved one here.

First off, I have never written a review before so bear with me if I’m doing this wrong. I was compelled to write this because of how very uniquely wonderful Selkirk Place is.My father has been there for around 2 years now and I have visited him from Calgary a bunch of times. I find the facility extremely clean and the staff to be very friendly and caring. My father is well taken care of and it really helps put my mind at ease.I thank each and every member of this organization and must say that if you have a family member that ends up in this place - rest assured, they're in good hands!Sam

1 star is too much. This care home is garbage. Unfathomable. They do not provide adequate care to the residents. The food they serve is utterly atrocious. They charge residents for anything and everything. Strongly recommend NOT putting your loved one in this facility, you will regret it. Social workers don’t respond to calls or emails. General manager doesn’t take any accountability for issues that happen. Care aids and nurses provide bare minimum care.

If you are placing a loved one into a private pay bed at SSV, read the contract VERY CAREFULLY especially item 8. It requires a resident or his/her family to give 30 days notice of vacating the room. This is impossible to do if you are waiting for a subsidized bed (you only have 48 hours to accept an offer) or if your loved one passes away while occupying a private pay room. Rent is approximately $7000 for a 31 day month. A security deposit of $3375 is also required at the time of admission. You only get a prorated amount of rent back if they are able to rent the room to someone else after it is vacated. In my case I only get 9 days rent back (no cheque received yet) and my security deposit is still in limbo. Care at SSV on my husband's floor was good once his CPAP issues were sorted out (3 months after admission). I had to contact Retirement Concepts head office in Vancouver to get action. My impression of most of the Management Team at SSV was negative. Most of the time they don't return phone calls or answer emails.

The kindness and support provided by staff is outstanding. The building is well-maintained and clean. Management cares deeply about staff and residents. It is a lovely community.

The staff here are wonderful and cared for my dear Auntie for years till her recent death due to advanced Alzeimers. They were always gentle, respectful and kind to her. I can't say enough good about the team" here. Thank-you."

Appalling!! Selkirk Seniors Village is FOR PROFIT and is owned by a CHINESE INSURANCE COMPANY. In March 2018 Health Minister Adrian Dix said he was concerned about the potential impact on seniors who reside in Retirement Concepts homes in British Columbia after Chinese officials took control. My dad was placed here by VIHA in Feb 2019. As his representative I told administration not to give dad zopiclone and they said they would not. They gave it to him for 5 weeks without family knowledge. He was also over medicated once with zopiclone, trazodone and quietiapine and once with trazodone and zopiclone. Cleaning staff were scarce, the food quality was poor at best and they seemed to be consistently understaffed. The unit often smelled of urine. Now that dad is in a not for profit facility he is happier, the floors and unit are cleaned regularly and the food is of better quality and he is enjoying meals again. The staff is consistent, friendly and caring. Do not feel pressured to place your family member here, there are much better options.

Phones are constantly down. Constantly changing staff. I am my brother's POA and Legal health representative. He has dementia and I am told he can make his own decisions concerning vaccines" yet he can't remember that he spoke to me today!"

My father's care was nonexistent. He was sent to the ER with what they said was a small sore that may be infected." Now if you think that a bed sore that was the size os the end of a 2X4 filled with dead tissue and fecal matter is small then this is the place to send your loved ones

One star is one too many, I would give zero stars if I could. My Dad died in this house of horrors. The only consolation for me around his death was that he is now totally free from the constant pain, over-drugging, neglect and abuse that he was living daily. After a couple of months at Selkirk Seniors Village" my Dad became very dazed and confused
