About the Business

Mactaggart Sanctuary | Nature Edmonton | I didn't plan to visit Mactaggart Sanctuary on a rainy Friday, but I was in the area and just happened to have my camera with me. Thankfully I had packed a rain jacket, but unfortunately I hadn't worn my hiking shoes. Mactaggart Sanctuary is more of a hike than a stroll as there are many…

So awesome to have these green spaces in the city! Great little trail. Probably want a water bottle and more than sandals (doable, but not as enjoyable).

Awesome place for a quick hike with beautiful views during fall. If you are looking for a great place to spend some time and be around nature.

MacTaggart Sanctuary features the junction where the Whitemud Creek also splits into the Blackmud Creek, various trails, and a flooded beaver dam.You can easily park at the MacTaggart Parking Lot off 23rd Avenue. However there is no bridge across the creek to walk the MacTaggart Trail Loop - and the trail is not clearly marked. But I suspect it can be done. Most trails are narrow, so in a pandemic it is difficult to socially distance. And you have to watch for exposed tree roots, cliff sides (maybe dangerous for children), and mud - it’s advised you bring your boots.Overall there is moderate difficulty walking the trails as they go up and down some severe slopes - not the best park for the physically disabled. There are birds and squirrels but no platform where they can congregate and get free hand outs.It is quite a nice park and has one sitting bench I saw.

Nice little trail. The trail is not very well defined though once you go deeper into the loop. You do need to be careful. From this loop, you can also access the Magrath and McTaggart walking trails.

This is a nice area to explore in the winter when the creek has frozen over and you can walk on it. Very scenic.

Worst hiking spot ever. Mosquitos, mosquitos, mosquitos. And when you stop in a clearing free of mosquitos . . . Ants. Zero directions, sketchy creek crossings, no scenery. Just zero reason to come here.

Always beautiful, any time of the year. So close to the hustle and bustle yet you feel completely tranquil and separate somehow. Very convenient location, and super picturesque. Lovely all around in nature.
