Mari-tech Appraisal & Inspection Ltd

A very negative experience working with Mari-tech. We had two appraisals done recently with Jennifer Clarke Hines. House values came in well below expected. On closer examination we found errors and omissions in the report, small details – but they pointed to a rush job and likely the reason for a value that didn’t align with the realtors assessment and the other appraisers value we later received.Fortunately we followed our gut and paid to have another company do a second appraisal and as expected, the values came in where we (and our agent thought they would) well above the Mari-tech appraisals.While values can be subjective, my concerns with Mari-tech deal more with the handling of our concerns. I shared my concerns with Jennifer, told her that I was wiling to pay for her time, but not the full price of two appraisals (over $600), given the errors I expected a reduction. She immediately leapt to the fact that reducing the fee would be fee contingent on value. I tried to explain that wasn’t the case, but she didn’t listen. I followed up with her senior, Rex Seaward who at first listened and encouraged me to send him details and agreed fees could be adjusted if the work was poor or sloppy. Then he was slow to respond (weeks in fact) and eventually told me it was up to Jennifer to make an adjustment. Jennifer tells me it is against company policy and would forward it to legal department.Bottom line, a very frustrating experience working with this company – slow to respond, unclear policies, not to mention the original concern of a report with errors and omissions and a low value.

I have had the pleasure of working with Derek Bellefontaine from Mari-tech for the past two years. As a mortgage broker I have dealt with a lot of appraisers over the years but Derek is my go-to because of his quick turn around times, attentiveness and valuation. I have completed over 100 appraisals with Derek now and I have never had an issue on any of them. If there ever was an issue I'm sure he would be quick to respond to help find a solution. I noticed some of the other negative reviews but I have never had this experience with Derek in particular. I'm sure it must be tough being an appraiser as no praise is given when a good job is done but when a property isn't what someone thinks it is worth watch out!
