Terrance Stanley Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated due to cancer, he embarked on an east to west cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$800 million has been raised in his name as of April 2020.A great monument located opposite the Parliament building and next to the Prime Minister’s office to showcase the zeal and drive of the Canadian spirit.

One of the most inspiring Canadians. Terry Fox's story brings a lot of motivation of what people are capable of in spite of all the odds. The write up next to the statue is well written. It's bang opposite the Parliament. Definitely to be visited if you are around the area - which most of the Ottawa tourists will be.A couple of parking lots nearby. Although the street on which the statue is, was pedestrian only when we visited.

An emotional moment for myself to stand before this statue that depicts a true Canadian icon and hero. I can remember back in 1980 as a young kid watching Tv coverage of his journey across Canada on his “marathon of hope”. As a kid it was insignificant, but now as an adult it is truly an overwhelming honour to know that I watched this man accomplish his dream (not to finish the run, but raise money/awareness for cancer) just before his death.

In my view, Terry Fox is one of the greatest Canadians that has ever lived. It is therefore appropriate that this sculpture is located across from Parliament, along Wellington Street. A beautiful memorial for one of our country's most famous figures.

When Terry Fox was 18 he had his right leg amputated to prevent the spread of bone cancer in his body. Fitted with a simple prosthetic leg Fox felt that there could be more done to raise awareness and research towards fighting cancer. So Fox became an activist and became a Canadian icon for his heroic attemp to run across Canada on one leg. On April 12 1980 Fox dipped his artifical leg in the Atlantic ocean by St John's NF to start his famous journey called the Marathon of Hope.At first Fox's journey had little coverage by the media, but as he ran through community's people started to line up on the streets to cheer him on, donate money and scream you can do it" as he tried to run a 26 mile marathon every day across the country. Evenutally Fox's Marthon of Hope became a national story and he spoke infront of massive crowds to promote the fight against cancer.Fox made many famous statements along his journey like... I believe in miracles

The Terry Fox Statue was located under the bridge across from the Chateau Laurier on Wellington Street before. Now, it is on the ground level for a change, and more visible than before on Sparks Street, so it should be easier for visitors to Ottawa, ON, Canada.
