In terms of academics, this is the top school on Vancouver Island and consistently among the top in British Columbia. This is inclusive of all private and public schools. They have a Gifted program that is outstanding for students with that aptitude, but students do not have to be in that Gifted program to access the many Honours, AP, or enriched courses offered there. This is also the top STEM school on the island. They have an amazing record of being the top school on the island for numerous University of Waterloo Mathematics and Computer Programming competitions (among other provincially and nationally recognized competitions). It is displayed on a STEM wall in the lobby and has also been written about in the Saanich News.Other programs that are exceptional include the music program. My oldest son was mediocre at best coming from his middle school band (told to pretend to play during concerts) to becoming a decent trumpet player who, more importantly, has learned to enjoy music in his everyday life. The football program is well known for its exceptional results, but the school also excels at other sports such as swimming, badminton, and recently volleyball with some provincial championships.Culture-wise, it is less cliquey than most schools. This can be good or bad depending on whether your kid is the star or not, but for my kids, it was definitely good as it felt very accepting and inclusive.Weaknesses include things such as the facility. It is not a new building and has no cafeteria or musical theatre, although it does have a beautiful new indoor/outdoor space for general use.The school also has an interesting and unique pattern to it. Its enrolment always increases yearly for each grad class. The grade 9 class has their numbers grow as they move to grade 10, and again to grade 11, etc. Given that it’s enrolment by boundary catchment is only around 180 students in total, but transfers from across boundaries and from other school districts (along with International students) push this enrolment to the 900 or so range, this is quite a testament as to its draw. Students will often transfer to this school as a university prep school since it has such a high rate of successful university transition for its students. As parents of 5 kids who attended multiple schools, we eventually transitioned all but our first child over to this school. She graduated from another local French Immersion school but we just found Mount Douglas to be such a better academic and social experience for our kids. We tried a French Immersion school again for our fourth child, but found it was significantly lacking compared to what our other children received, so we transferred him over as well. Best decision we ever made.

I think I made a good choice to send my daughter to this school from Beijing, after four years she is stuying life science in U of T. She is very thankful to all her teachers...

Horrible school. Sent my daughter here thinking it would be good for him, (I have heard good things about this school from friends and familly.) I was wrong. The main gripe I have is a specific math teacher. I will not be naming her but I will call her Ms. H. Now, my wife and I knew that math might be a challange to our child, but I never immagined it would be challanging for the teacher to assign it properly. It was a month ago when I started to hear the complaints from my child, she claimed, the teacher assings too much work. And

Horrible school. I started going to this school in 11th grade, a lot of empty promises were made to me by staff. This school pretends to care about you, when they actually don’t. 90% of staff are racist. The art program is horrendous. They pride themselves on being the most academic school in the districts , to which they are but the cons of going here greatly outweigh the pros. As an indigenous student, the district pays more for me attend school, I never saw a single penny of that government fund actually go towards me. This school failed me multiple times and continued to fail me up to graduation. The worst school I’ve ever been to.

Pretty cool school Only issue is that there’s no consequence for racism

Apart from the asbestos on the floor trim, place was pretty ok and the teachers knew what they were doing for the most part.

If you want to be in a school that consists of a football program with way too much emphasis put on it leaving most of the other programs to be sidelined, mostly sub-par teaching (with the exception of a few teachers), kids vape-boxing the bathrooms, stupid grad transitions assignments that mostly consist of art projects that aren't really that beneficial for the students and that are actual prerequisites to graduate, and an overabundance of students that most of the time overflow classes and make lunchtime and walking in the halls aneurysm inducing, MD's the place for you.

What a great school! As soon as you walk in the door, there is a sense of purpose and community. Students and teachers are here to learn. The staff are professional, collaborative and welcoming. The diverse student body is composed of interested, hard-working and friendly students. On top of all that, there are so many extracurricular opportunities! A wonderful place to teach and learn.
