AITF is Alberta Government arm in applied research and technology development. Its headquarter is located in Millwood, Edmonton. The Calgary facility is located at the University of Calgary research park. This building is dominantly a house to the oil & gas sector in AITF, however there are other groups like National Research Canada (NRC), Seetak West and a few other entities. There is a high head lab full of equipment built for reservoir engineering studies with the focus on Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). These labs include chemical EOR labs, Steam Additives labs, Tight Oil Recovery labs, surfactant and polymer analyses labs and analytical chemistry and rheological properties labs. STEADi is the industrial research program on use of chemical additives with steam which has recently received a lot of attention by the industry. The staff of AITF in oil an gas teams are comprised of researchers as well as technologists working together. AITF is offering contract research and technology development services to oil companies, offers consortiums as well as JIP reseach programs and also does some research using government funding. All research works are focused on assisting Alberta economy. AITF researchers are holding PhDs or high graduate educations in the engineering or science fields working with oil industry very closely. AlTF has other research groups on basic research, pulp & forestry, fuels & lubes, surface separation and will soon undergo a merger with all other sections of Alberta Innovates.
