I really like this place,I like that the food tastes so good and it's not heavy on my pocket..it is not at all like a few other expensive restaurants that serve south indian food in calgary ..the fact that this place is always packed speaks for the place.. I have started going here just for their weekend thali now a days...the service has improved isn't slow like it used to be and the people behind the counter as always friendly..

Went to Chennai Spices for dinner on Thursday. Ambience was ok, small space, and had to wait for 10-15 mins.Food was very authentic. Ordered chicken Chettinad, malabar paratha, idli and vada, and chicken 65 biriyani. Everything was very delicious. It seemed pricy at first, but generous portion.

We were craving for South Indian food and we are glad that we choose Chennai Spices for our lunch. We ordered One Mini Tiffin and Poori Bhajji, Instead they gave us 2 Mini Tiffins by mistake and we took it positively and decided to pay for it later. Surprisingly, when I was about yo pay for our food, they didn't charge us for second tiffin as they saw us packing our Poori Bhajji for takeaway. I insisted them to charge us for second Mini Tiifin but they said it's on them. We gave them good tip to compensate for their good gesture and quality service and food. Must recommended place to try south indian especially if you live in NW or NE Calgary.

Edit- Only South Indian food is good. Other items like Indo- Chinese food and Biryanis were extremely spicy despite informing the server in advance. The server rushed us as he wanted to accommodate other customers.Amazing South indian restaurant in Calgary. Must try Chicken tikka uttapam, Veg Pizza Uttapam, Mysore masala dosa, and filter coffee..

We stopped here for lunch while we were on our way to Banff from Edmonton. To our luck, it was a Saturday and we had the offer of the weekend thaali.We opted for the non-vegetarian Thaali with fish curry and the Chicken Chettinad as our side dishes along with a parotta and a masala thosai.Although the chicken chettinad and fish curry were served in small quantities, the fish curry was packed with flavours while the chicken chettinad was okay but not amazing.However, the overall portion of the thaali was definitely enough for the 2 of us with the parotta and masala thosai included as well.The thosai was done well with a crispy batter and potato masala that was well spiced. The chutneys did justice by elevating the flavours up since they were not watery in anyway.The rest of the thaali items such as the payasam, pappadum and the rasam were all accompanying the thaali well.As for the filter coffee, they took a while to arrive but in no way I can fault that as it was worth the complete wait with the perfect blend of the milk, sweetness and coffee flavours in it.All in all, for the very reasonable price with this big thaali, I do know that this will be my spot for South Indian food in Calgary. It’s a pity that over here in the Greater Toronto Area where I reside, South Indian food is usually slightly exorbitant or we are resorted to Sri Lankan food instead.

Food and service were excellent. Ordered the Mysore Masala and Mutton Dosa and a fish curry. The sauces with the dosa were excellent--two nice and spicy and one cooling. The dosa were a good size and had to take a lot of the fish curry and the large helping of rice. The fish was a perfect texture and consistency and perfect spiciness. Service was prompt and helpful. Definitely recommend.
