Extendicare Southwood Lakes

Like any care facility, this one could always use more staff. The ones who work there though are as helpful as possible and take personal care of the residents considering their health and mental needs. Both of my parents live here and I feel confident that they are receiving good care.

Bottom line: this facility needs higher staffing levels and greater respect for family wishes. Despite a rush to move a patient in, room was completely unready when promised twice due to poor planning and insufficient workforce. Staff unwilling to respect family requests regarding care decisions at the time of intake; staff made care decisions in meetings that family members were not invited to attend, and finally failed to consider published evidence and cultural diversity. The resulting care decisions (which were a total surprise to the family) upset the patient, and caused potentially irreparable damage to the patient's relationship with family members. Ontario long-term care in general has a poor reputation, and this facility is no different.

My father went from Banwell Nursing Home to Extendicare. The facility is quite a bit nicer on appearance in comparison however the staff go missing... Several times I visited and no staff were seen.

Mother in law checked in at 11am. Escaped by 6 pm. (The same day) Received a call from nursing home at 7pm (they were informed that she would try to get out). I found her at 8 on Mount Royal. We did not bring her back! The kicker about it we were charged for one day stay lol. Piece of advice when the alarm goes off run outside don’t check to see who is missing and place more cameras outside and down North Talbot. We were very lucky we found her and she was okay. Think twice before you put her in this place.
