It would be preferable if no stars were an option. I would not recommend Burlington Housing Authority. It would be best to explore other possibilities such as Champlain Housing Trust, Cathedral Square, Section 8 and other creative options. My own experience and that of many BHA residents I know has been that residents are routinely mistreated and treated abusively in various ways. Let me clarify here that the abusive behavior comes from the management staff. They seem to have no training in how to relate with human decency to vulnerable populations, especially those with disabiilities. I know of an instance where a resident who also has an acute form of PTSD has been aggressively and abusively harassed for months on end, and that situation is continuing. The Sash Coordinators and Activities Coordinators have almost always been incredibly lovely, caring, and compassionate human beings, but those positions at BHA also have a high degree of turnover. In addition, safety issues with the property are sometimes not addressed. If you end up living in one of their properties, don’t be surprised to discover that your neighbor in the building has an extensive and extensively violent criminal background, including convictions for two gruesome murders. If you are confined to a wheelchair, don’t be shocked if he is placed directly across the hall from you. You may have a neighbor with a heavy crack or heroin addiction or discover that there is a human trafficking and drug ring operating in the apartment next to you. If you are looking for safe and stable housing, look elsewhere!

Completely incompetent maintenance staff. They rarely fix anything properly, and are often unwilling to even try. They have policies against fixing most problems outside of normal business hours (so when things go wrong on a Friday, they won't even pretend to fix it until Monday.) They also have lots of other issues that harm tenants.

Burlington housing is not what you think...there is nothing “low income” about their housing. The more you make, the more they take! There neighborhoods are unsafe And unsanitary. If you have an emergency maintenance issue expect that they will not show up at your home for weeks...maybe even months. I’ve been living in a “subsidized” apartment for 12 years and I should’ve been able to save money to get out of here but let me be clear...once you get into one of these housing projects, good luck getting out! It’s like a prison sentence. Instead of moving forward they push you backwards. They offer no help, they may say they have a number of services but nothing that will benefit you in your life long goals. It’s pretty sad when the city that this association resides in is even calling it “corrupt.” And is disgusted with the way the people there are treating there tenants. If you have goals for your life, then be sure to steer clear of this place. They won’t hesitate to flip your life upside down.

Yesterday 02/10 I dropped off some paperwork. The young lady working the front desk came to the window with a visible attitude. Smacking her lips and hand on her hip. Asked for information regarding an emergency matter and got a so what attitude. Was extremely short and rude with myself and another client who came in. She was literally being rude to the other women who came in because she couldn't understand her accent. Doesn't BHA have translators? Don't work in social services if you don't like people. There was zero reason for the attitude. We were both there to submit documents at the request of BHA so I'm not understanding why the poor treatment of clients. Neither of us provoked this women she came to the window ready to treat us like dirt.

I have been living in a unit oversaw by BHA and managed by CHT for 3 years and I'm suffering from a critical infestation of bed bugs and mites. And they just don't care. Erlrich pest control has record of pest found by their own tech but refuses to release the proof. I sent Hannah and Ann my property mgrs photographic evidence they requested and still they will not treat my unit. I requested to be moved out of my unit but they are ignoring that as well.I've been suspended from my job which I love but they need to keep the environment sanitary for medical reasons. So I cannot work. But BHA requested my pay records so my VERAP will go away and I will now have to start paying rent. Also because I'm working now I do not qualify for food stamps. But I spend so much money on laundry, bug spray, etc that my check disappears rapidly and before next payday I cannot afford to eat.I wish I never moved to Vermont. I'm suicidal. My friends have all left me. I'm alone. All I have is my job to keep me going and CHT/BHA are letting my life be taken from me by something they can easily just throw money at. They received govt grant nearing $35million last year. But they can't authorize some pest solution as they promised in the lease we signed.I wish I never moved here. I wish I toughed it out back home. Anything is better than where I am now.

Their staff really aren't helpful and I wish I could give NEGATIVE stars. 2 examples of why just from the last 6 months:1. Our (mine and my mother's) apartment's hot water (and usually the heat right along with it) has gone out somewhere between 6 and 8 times (I've lost track of the exact number) in the last two and a half WEEKS!!! Instead of properly fixing the hot water heater, replacing it or otherwise solving the issue, they just reset the boiler" and we're out of hot water again in 24-48 hours

They do not care about tenants in any way shape or form. They are rude, condescending beauracrats who literally laugh at the misfortune of their tenants and only act for them if they are U.N dropoffs because the federal government pays them a couple grand a month just to house them. This is why local people who need homes and have serious financial / health issues do not get the resources they need. They import voting muscle and coddle them, while scoffing at people from the area.

Less you are an family of homeless immigrants or a single mother/pregnant than trust me your just wasting time, they will not reach out to help unless its a situation like that and if they do it’ll be at rhe point where you say im okay now/ 2-7 years later
