Newcastle Pit Coal Mine Local Heritage Site
This is the only remaining site which pertains to Nanaimo’s original three associated coal mines which were opened in 1852 following the discovery of two coal outcroppings along the Nanaimo waterfront which pertained to the Douglas Seam, and one coal outcropping on saysutshun which pertained to the Newcastle Seam. The discovery of coal was the decisive factor which initiated both the urban and industrial development of what would ultimately become Nanaimo.
