I have been a patron at Chez Doval for twenty years and returned tonight after about 8 months. Wow! the bar has been dropped, and the quality of the place has gone down hill ! I arrived to meet my wife at 5:00 pm, put in our order. and noticed that everyone who arrived 30 minutes after us had received their orders before us. It took an hour, (6pm) before we received a starter. We were told without even an apology, that an error had occurred, thus they rushed the main course and the grilled chicken arrived charred, tasteless, and dry. Even the house wine is not the same. We were neglected for the evening and our order was forgotten. Service like this is not acceptable! I will not be returning ever.

This is a neighborhood style resto catering to meals among friends and family. Food is good, especially the charbroil fishes. Wine list is limited but should try the most expensive ones which are only a few dollars more than the others. Service is friendly. Decor is simple. All in, this is a very nice eating place for family and friends to share food and have a good time together.

I was excited from all the reviews and the hype online but the food was mediocre. The chicken was dry and not flavorful, the rest of the grilled items were over cooked, the fries were soggy and cold, and the service isn’t outstanding. On the positive side I have to say portions are big, the olives when you get seated are a nice touch, but not worth the visit if you’re looking for a good quality meal.

Although I had the grilled chicken, which wasn't bad, my overall experience at the restaurant was quite disappointing due to the service provided by an older gentleman who appeared to be having a bad day. He seemed to be in a sour mood, frowning when taking my order, and even loudly expressing frustration when his machine ran out of paper, he literary shouted ‘tabarnac’.Unfortunately, while clearing the plates, he accidentally stepped over my foot without offering an apology, as if implying he could behave however he pleased. This negative encounter truly marred my experience, leaving me with no desire to return and would definitely caution others from visiting if you wish to avoid spoiling your evening.

Small with a homey, low-key atmosphere, Chez Doval serves among the best Portuguese fares I've ever had in Montreal. We especially love the calamari grilled over charcoal, served with baked potatoes (or fries) and a salad. The service is mostly polite if not particularly warm but the servers are efficient. The place can be a bit noisy during weekend evenings especially when the usual older gentleman minstrel decides to ply his trade in the hope of making some coins from generous sated patrons.

As others have said, the signature chicken was dry. The steaks and seafood were very good. The waiter was drunk and rude to us in English and Portuguese. But we sort of expected that, since we are Brazilian and they are Portuguese.

Love their food and service. Casual setting. Family friendly. Kids love it, friends love it and the grandparents love it. This is a place that over the years, we’ve been going for a decade, has always maintained quality both in food and service at decent prices. We highly recommend.

The atmosphere is cozy, but the food was not as great as we had a couple years ago.We felt welcomed even we are the only Asian in the restaurant. The menu is simple and straight forward. We had mostly seafood dishes (eg. fish, clams, octopus) and 2 meat dish (chicken and steak). I have the say that overall the seafood dishes are better than the meat dishes. The octopus really stands out, not chewy and very flavorful. The salad accompany the octopus pretty well too.Dishes to avoid:1) clams - overcooked2) steak - very chewy, not flavouful3) chicken - rather blendThe house wine is not expensive, but just like grape water. Also, the espresso was not strong either. The owners are very friendly and gave us some nice dessert wine on the house.
