Bairro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy

I came to Edmonton for the weekend and was hopeful to find somewhere to train. I contacted Bairro BJJ and when I arrived at the gym, Professor Hoss welcomed me in for open mat. All of the guys I rolled with were great! It was nice to meet some new people and drop in to a great facility. Thanks so much!

I joined Bairro after going through a major life event. The coaches and partners Ive had have been nothing but exceptional and go above and beyond to help you learn. I’m a slow learner and they have no issues slowing down moves and breaking it down step by step to have a better understanding. All coaches are super knowledgeable and the atmosphere is very inviting and safe. Not only is it a great work out but everyone has contributed to me feeling more confident in the art but also myself in my day to day life. I highly recommend Bairro for anyone thinking about Jiu Jitsu. It is a great community to join.

CoachKeltie and the other staff have been excellent, we didn't know what to expect because we don't have any experience with martial arts gyms. My daughter was hesitant because she is a little shy. With that being said my daughter has loved coming to class and seems to really enjoy the instruction and atmosphere created by the staff. I definitely recommend Bairro.

I started attending BAIRRO BJJ ACADEMY in early March of 2023 on the recommendation of my good friend Marty Franco.In all honesty, it has been a GREAT experience for me. I was a little hesitant at first due to my age (58 yrs). However I did a drop in class and I was instantly hooked. The coaching staff ( Professor Hoss and Keltie, Coach Brandon, Coach Dal and Coach Phil ) are exceptional and all participating members have been very welcoming.If you want to have a good experience in the marshal arts realm, I highly recommend BAIRRO BJJ ACADEMY. I have been training with Bairro for just over a year. It was (and still is) very welcoming and the instruction is top notch. If you're looking for a change in fitness, to learn self defense or just gain confidence in your own abilities, you'll find it at Bairro 124.

Since my first trial class, I've been impressed by the welcoming environment and the professionalism of the instructors. The gym offers a broad range of classes at convenient times that are suitable for all skill levels. Training partners are supportive and encouraging, creating an atmosphere where you can learn and progress at your own pace while having fun. Choosing Bairro to begin my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey was an excellent decision, and I recommend anyone who's considering it to dip their toes in the water and try a trial class.

EDIT: First review was left in 2018, so here's a summer 2023 update. The place is still great, and the business has grown a lot since my initial review. New location opening up soon for BJJ. Kickboxing at the location inside Evolve Strength. Best schedule in Edmonton, and very professionally run business. Still highly recommend.2018 review:This grappling gym is situated inside the downtown Evolve Strength gym. Just walk right thought the main door for Evolve, grab a towel, and head left to the grappling room. Evolve Strength is a modern, clean, wide-open, all-encompassing gym, with steam rooms, towel service, astro-turf area, olympic weightlifting area, tons of squat racks, pull up bars, and free weights. Athlete-focused health services are also co-located with the gym (which takes up the whole area that the old MEC was occupying).The grappling room is supremely clean, and has the highest quality mat infrastructure I ever had the chance to train on. The mats are nice, but what is exceptional is that they are installed over a secondary shock absorbing layer in a setup very similar to what you find in high level competition judo mats or a gymnastic floor. Dynamic takedowns that would often take your breath away (for the wrong reasons) in many gyms would feel quite nice and safe at Bairro 124. The odds of you getting slammed down by a Bairro training partner are slim though, as the core group of Hoss' students are super respectful and the overall atmosphere is quite chill and favorable to solid learning. Overall I'd say the average skills/experience of Bairro's members hovers around the blue belt level. That means that as a beginner, you'll have plenty of challenging, yet not too out of reach partners to roll with. I expect the overall skill level of this place to increase quite rapidly over the next few months and years. Once you start training at Bairro, it's very likely you'll want to keep training there and not elsewhere, so the core group of members will for sure continue to progress together to reach higher levels.Hoss, the founder of the gym, runs his business with enthusiasm and brings a very positive vibe to his gym. He is welcoming and definitely instills the core fundamentals of grappling to his students, both with regards to technique and attitude. The gym has classes or open mats 7 days a week.Prices are competitive, and being located inside such a modern gym is a big plus for Bairro compared to many other BJJ/MMA gyms. If you live in Edmonton, the membership fees are totally worth it. If you're in town only now and then, the punch pass is a sweet deal: 20 classes for 300$ is cheaper than most other places. I think the punch pass expires after a little while though, so that could potentially be a problem, depending on how often you can make in into town. Talk with Hoss if that is the case though. He's a stand-up guy that will figure out something that works for you. As a wandering grappler myself, I know that Bairro will become my premium grappling spot when I find myself in Edmonton.Cheers!

Awesome atmosphere for training, everyone is so friendly and welcoming and you feel at home + part of a team even in your trial class! It’s great that they run morning, afternoon and evening classes so no matter what your schedule looks like you can attend at least once a day. Professor Hoss and the other instructors have an immense amount of knowledge about the art and are more than willing to help anyone that asks or needs it! The fact that the administration staff has checked up on me numerous times on a consistent basis to see how training and everything is going, and how any issues I’ve had have been resolved within 24 hours shows how dedicated bairro is to ensuring a high quality experience for everyone. This gym has exceeded any and every one of my expectations, 5 stars isn’t enough to give this gym and I strongly recommend this place to anyone interested in brazilian jiu jitsu!

I am visiting Edmonton and was looking for a place to train. Bairro is set in a brand new facility, with modern and welcoming vibes. Jodie* was instructing the noon class and was very detailed in his instruction and answered any of my questions. Thanks again to Hoss and the team at Barrio, can’t wait to come back to visit.
