Early or late in the season you can just drive up and get a spot on the boat. During the busy seasons you are better to book ahead. However they charge you to book ahead to get onto the island so you are best to either book a spot both ways or take the bridge over and book your spot coming back. You can always take your chances and just show up. If you can not get a spot on the first boat there is another coming soon after.

They cancelled our ferry and put us on the next ferry (2 hours later) without informing us. We showed up a half hour early for our ferry only to learn this. They said we should have been told via email, which we wholeheartedly agreed. They definitely should have told us in advance. Took no accountability. Even suggested it was our fault not theirs. So disappointing and ruined a precious vacation day.

I would give 0 stars. We booked our ferry long before the fire disaster. This page said we would be contacted if our reservation changed. We arrived at 12:30 for our 1:30 crossing. A passenger informed us at 1:15 that the ferry was not going until 3:15. Not acceptable. Take the bridge if you can!

We decided to take the ferry across and the bridge back. When we phoned the first time to reserve we got cut off at payment time and had to phone back we were so glad we did! When we phoned the 2nd time the wonderful lady advised us not to bother reserving as it was free to cross and the ferries were not very full especially on a Thursday in May and if you arrive in the am.We were in a 5th wheel and they allowed us to sleep in the line over night and we had no problems getting a spot on the 0830 ferry. The staff stated you were pretty safe not to reserve in May/June…..It was a smooth ride across, facilities and amenities on board and very friendly staff. Wifi too if needed.

We arrived an hour before our sail time. We didn’t have to wait long, they allowed us to drive into the boat just a few minutes after we arrived. Online said there is a 1-way free ride to PEI from Nova Scotia but not guaranteed. We opted to book online and paid the $84 reservation because we had an itinerary to follow and needed to be in PEI.The ferry was clean. It had a restaurant on it, Salt Water Cafe, although we were told that there’s no full kitchen, so don’t expect fancy food. We ordered polish sausages and clam chowder soups because we wanted to eat something warm and not cold sandwiches. The food tasted good. It was not bad at all. Prices were reasonable. The dining area was clean. Staff were all friendly. The trip was fun and fast. We even saw whales out in the ocean! It was so cool! We arrived in PEI sooner than we thought.
