The Brethour Family Cemetery

'... a place of peaceful rest' ... as it says on the bronze plaque. This is a family cemetery and a registered burial site, constructed on what was previously, farm land.It is very difficult indeed, to re-zone a registered burial site. After the original farmland was subjected to compulsory purchase, it seems that not even the Federal Authorities could re-zone this burial site for airport use.Personally, I am glad it remains as a family cemetery. Having your own family cemetery is an impactful way to become grounded into your mortality. Very sobering.It's almost a paradox that a place of peaceful rest, should be immediately adjacent to a busy international airport; but there it is...The original Brethour family farmed 500 acres of the land that is now used by the airport. The family name of Brethour is associated with several significant resources in Canada. There is even an Island in the Straits of Georgia, called Brethour Island, as well as a whole town, back East. The Brethour family seem to have created a multi-generational legacy, which, in this quiet place, one takes one’s hat off to.

Immaculate and lovingly maintained by a blood family decendant of the Brethour family. A shining example of his dedication to the community to say the least!

A very old graveyard going back to the time when the Pat Bay highway didn't exist and East Saanich Rd. crossed where the airport is now. East Saanich Rd. ended at Schwartz (sic) Bay now Swartz Bay
