In summer 2019, I decided to transition from non-profit to the public sector by accepting a short contract with one of the Federal Government departments. The contract ended and, due to a combination of factors, one of which is the pandemic, I remained unemployed for 14 months. Filled with shame and self-blame, and squished between reality and my violently shaken self-confidence, I realized I need help. Shaye listened, nodded approvingly, smiled, and took in all I was saying through words, body language, and tone of voice. At the end of my disorganized speech, Shaye did not speak about any of the elements which I had identified as barriers to employment. She spoke about the importance of knowing and appreciating myself and finding the right mental and spiritual balance as a counterweight to unhappiness.
