The only water-based National Park and it is very beautiful no matter which season you choose to visit.

Glad they are open despite the flood on the road and the pier where the boat dock. Boat tour is closed at this time until further notice.

Make sure you take protection for mosquitoes, flies, and other bugs. Long sleeves, long pants, and boots. Lots of stagnant water around, so be forewarned.

Please note I only stayed on kabetogama lake. The smaller lakes in the park may be very different from my experience, but I want give give this as a warning to people who want to stay on kabetogama.I think this park is great for people driving motorboats around a lake, camping, and fishing. This is NOT a good park for people who enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and peace and quiet. I went there with my girlfriend this past weekend and canoed around the lake. The scenery is lovely and as two geologists we really appreciated some of the spectacular geologic history of this region. However, from just before sunrise until well after sunset all we could hear was motorboats. Several of the craft knew to give our canoe a wide breadth in the lake, but others sped past us dangerously close. If you are like us and want some quite, stay away from Kabetogama Lake (and maybe this entire park). Isle Royale is not far away and offers much more serenity.

A beautiful facility - we recommend heading down to Rainy Lake Visitor Center for some nice hiking trails - especially lovely with the fall leaves changing.

This is our least favorite national park. The constant noise of motorboats is a huge minus to the place. It feels almost like a resort where people can bring their boats and fish all day. Nothing too fantastic in terms of views. Rainy Lake visitor center is nice, with informative displays etc., but kabetogama visitor center is basically a big room with a boat launch outside. The hiking trail closest to this center is like walking through a marshland. The trail is slick from the wet soil, is not maintained well, and the bugs are crazy. My guess is that the experience is better with a houseboat. The park's grand tour from rainy Lake is a good way to see the park and learn about its history.

I was very disappointed by Voyageurs, the only canoes you could rent from the National Park Service are located on a lake where they won't provide you transportation. What's the point?!
