It's a historic site. The building was built in 1903-4 as the Master Mechanic and Stores Department (office and supplies) for the Grand Trunk Railway. It is the only rail equipment servicing building remaining on the waterfront. Its location is a focal point on the south shore of Kempenfelt Bay. It's called Southshore Community Centre now. It contains a information Center, public washroom and a event hall. There is a metered parking lot. It's free to local people.

Great place for a walk, picnic. Picnic tables and benches, lots of shade and fantastic breeze off the lake.

There are plenty of parking spots most of the time around the year. Currently it’s $10/hour if you are not local residents. The washroom is also open year around which is very nice and convenient. The view is beautiful. It’s about 3 kilometres from the parking lot to downtown Barrie.
