Escondite - A Hidden Gem in VerdunEscondite, the new Mexican restaurant in Verdun, exceeded all expectations on its opening night. The ambiance was vibrant and authentic, with colorful murals and warm lighting. The service was exceptional, and the staff made everyone feel welcome. The food was the highlight, with flavorful dishes like the tableside guacamole and gyoza nacho 2.0. Escondite is a must-visit for anyone craving a taste of Mexico in Verdun.

Asked a couple of questions on the bill and got a lesson in mathematics and restaurant “ways of doing things” from the owner. I have never been treated with so much arrogance …

To give some context, I’m older than the patrons that were there (40) and quite discerning when it comesto Mexican food/drink. Made the mistake of going late. It’s clearly meant to be an eatery/drinkerie for the younger crowd. The place was in a disarray, waiters could not keep up with the demand and pace - empty drink glasses everywhere. I often saw some wait staff drinking with customers (not necessarily a bad thing, but annoying when you’re waiting for service). The food itself, if you have high standards for tacos - don’t go (they give you 2 puny tacos with no salsas, lemon - they only have Tabasco to offer). The tinga was decent, The michelada was good. Asked for a quality tequila, got it on ice (never asked for it on ice). The decor is nice, but the place itself, for what I like, didn’t quite cut it..

I started off with the cucumber-mango salad. The presentation was nice, but the mangoes weren't ripe. It wasn't as good as I remember.Three of us shared a plate of guacamole and chips. The combo was delicious.I had the general tao cauliflowers. They were covered in too much rib sauce and were served alone, without even a sprinkle of something crunchy, herbs for texture or a spoon of rice to balance out the strong acidity of the sauce.I finished off my meal with the cauliflower tacos, of which there were only two. They were made vegan by removing the sauce and doubling the guac. They were crispy on the outside and warm and tender on the inside, but bland. I tried to flag down a waiter for 10 minutes to get a slice of lime, but they were all too busy, so I relunctantly ate the tacos plain.I have a small appetite, so I was full after 3 tapas.Like every other escondite, the decor was very trendy and eclectic. The music was too loud, so we couldn't hear each other speak across the table.

The waiter initially informed us of the option to indulge in a shared tasting menu, which, priced at a reasonable $35 and encompassing a dessert, seemed enticing. Despite already feeling satiated by the end of our meal, we opted for the dessert, assuming it was included in the aforementioned price. We were disappointed upon receiving the bill, as each item was charged separately at a rate of $10 per item, culminating in a total of $70, a stark contrast to our initial understanding of a $35 inclusive price. Had we been aware of the individual charge for the dessert, which consisted of three churros that were regrettably overcooked, we would not have elected to order it in the first place.

I had a dinner reservation with friends last night. the service, atmosphere and overall experience was fantastic! We went with the tasting menu which was a great value and experience. But love that you can dine very inexpensive as well as the prices / value / quality are better than many other Mexican restaurants in Montreal. All the food and drinks were delicious and was given a good tequila recommendation which I enjoy to sip. So happy to have one of my favourite Mexican restaurants now nearby my home! Will be back often I’m sure! Highly recommend!Only comment would be is to call if you have a larger group. The online booking limited me at 6ppl but there was more space while we were there. Part of my group cancelled anyways so it didn’t affect me but heads up to call as to not miss out on a great place!!

Went there for supper with a friend, took the bar, no reservation! The staff is super friendly and attentive to you, water coming all the time and our empty plates where never left in front of us for long. Good drinks, verryyyy good tacos!
