Dr. Brian Murray, Sleep Neurologist at Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto recommended I see Dr. David J Stern at Dentistry in Oak Ridges in early 2020. I had been suffering with sleep issues for years. Although, I didn’t snore or have sleep apnea per se, I had a neurological disorder that prevented me from falling asleep. Each night I would go to bed and just as I was about to fall asleep, I would be jolted awake by hypnic jerking. By the time, the third jolt occurred each evening, I would be wide awake and sleep would become but a distant unattainable dream. To say I was sleep deprived would be an understatement. Headaches plagued me and a year prior to seeing Dr. Stern, I averaged very few hours of sleep a night. Dr. Stern was a Godsend. He explained the oral appliance he recommended for my issues in great detail along with how it would work providing me with a custom-fit and allowing oxygen to enter my airway without a problem. Once made, I started using it right away and I could not believe the results. I now check in with him every six months to ensure the appliance is working optimally and he is always quite thorough. The appliance has allowed me to sleep 8 hours a night and I now feel rested when I awake each morning. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Stern for helping me on my path to greater health. Without sleep nothing in your life works and for the last year and 3/4, I have to say, I can cross off sleep issues from my list. It has improved my quality of life tremendously. Dr Stern and all his staff are very friendly and helpful. They take an interest in their patients and do their best to make every visit a pleasant experience.I got my first oral appliance to treat snoring and sleep apnea from Dr Stern in 2010 when I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. Since I am claustrophobic I did not feel that a CPAP machine was an option for me. I am glad that I researched online and found Dr Stern’s practice as because of him the quality of my sleep has improved. Dr Stern cares about his patients and is very knowledgable and relates well to his patients. He takes time and explains in layman’s terms so his patients understand. Dr Stern and his friendly and welcoming staff do their best to make your visit a pleasant one. I was first diagnosed with Moderate Sleep Apnea over 10 years ago and have been tested twice. The Sleep Apnea team gave me a list of 6 experienced specialists in my area. I reviewed all 6 and was very impressed with Dr. Stern's long years of experience and the concise information and layout of his website. Dr. Stern I found to be very passionate about his work and took a lot of time to thoroughly educate me on how these devices work and his approach to ensuring they eliminate my sleep apnea. I returned 6 times for adjustments and he provided two at home sleep apnea tests to ensure he thoroughly understood how I was being affected by Sleep Apnea. Recently I discovered my blood-oxygen levels were dropping at night when I slept through my Garmin Watch that tracks vitals. I have never taken notice to this before and decided to investigate further and do a sleep study. The sleep study discovered I have mild sleep apnea and explained the drop in blood oxygen level at night. Dr. Stern created me an oral appliance that was discreet and barely noticeable that was similar to a mouth guard that just moved my lower jaw forward to prevent the obstruction in my air-way at night. After a few weeks I noticed I was getting much better sleep and felt recharged with more energy throughout the day. I have lived with this my whole life and didn't really pay much attention to this and thought this was normal. Dr. Stern took the time to understand my condition and improve my quality of sleep. Dr. David Stern was recommended to me by my dentist. I was having issue with my CPAP waking me up at night due to mask movement. I tried 3 different masks and although some were slightly better, they did not resolve the lack of quality sleep I was experiencing.
