The walls of this rehabilitation centre regurgitate the importance of compassionate care and yet the institution treats situations with so much staunch opposition and cold indignity. For a hospice centred in the Catholic faith we were shocked at the lack of hospitality and compassion from many of the management. And, lack of care from many of the rude nurses. If you’ve faced unimaginable situations with this place you are not alone. Two years after my moms passing and thinking of this place and her treatment here makes my stomach turn. Please heed the negative reviews on this page. They are true and transparent. Send your loved ones anywhere else.

I feel privileged to have been able to have my dear mother stay for two weeks in Shavers palliative care until her passing last month. I am touched by the outstanding sincere compassion we both received during this emotional and difficult time. My mother was treated like royalty by all the staff, and this made the sad experience a form of loving last time for my mother and me. The chaplains, Laura K and Sister were caring spiritual angels for my dying mother, and they spent so much time reading to her and reassuring her. Dr G. Arvinte’s patient, understanding, tender way of caring for my mother brought tears to my eyes, and her knowledge and communication skills in explaining to me were so impressive. She was so personable, sincere and thorough thus leading a wonderful example for all the palliative staff. Also, I appreciated being able to get ice and hot water for my mother on my own. I am deeply grieving my mother’s passing, but I am grateful that everyone at Shavers helped me to keep the memory positive. Thank you to all of you. I admire your care.

If I could rate this place any lower, I would. Except there are a few good people working there. For the most part though, my family and I found the nurses and nursing staff to be uncaring, rude people who don't really seem to care much about their patients. But they certianly make sure they all get their breaks and lunches at the same night, doesnt matter if a patient needs help! Which was what happened to my mom quite often! She would buzz the nurse for help only to quite often be told theyll be there soon then show up 20 minutes to 40 minutes later! What the hell good is that? So many more problems there but I'll save that for my formal letter that I will be sending to the higher ups at Shaver. If you have the unfortunate circumstances to have to spend time in that place all I have to say is..... GOOD LUCK!!!! Because you will certainly need it. Worst place to heal.

Went to visit my grandma during visiting hours, during the visit I learned that they weren't giving her water. Or feeding her properly, I bought 1 month TV for her, and her nurse is refusing to set it up. I asked the nurse some questions on my it seems paitents are being neglected, and the nurse started screaming and yelling at me. Calling for security and saying that I was banned from the property, and wouldn't let me in my grandma's room anymore. So we are filing a motion to move her.It has been made painfully clear that the only people who work here are regects from hospitals so they take their anger out on their paitents who can no talk. Or talk to family.

On behalf of my Dad who is being neglected and not receiving proper care. I have POA and the hospital will not provide any updates and he is being treated disrespectful and his personal and religious beliefs are being infringed upon××update, still no update on my Dad. Also, a news organization just pointed out how the board of trustees and leadership is ALL WHITE! ( NOTE, all screeners are white, hard to believe no ethnic individual applied!)Switchboard staff who clearly abused and overstepped her boundary and threatened and harassed me due to my race/ethnic background is Kara. I have been racially profiled and discriminated by the switchboard staff, Kara and one of the security guards.Alleged accusations with no proof.Kara was rude to me and my Dad's friends and refused to put calls through to my Dad. I called multiple times to be put through and Kara will pick up and hang up or just let the phone ring. (Friends will testify)I was not allowed in with a lanyard however the staff allowed a white family of 2 without a lanyard! When questioned, the screener lady advised they have one. I said show it and behold the gentleman said he doesn't have one. I was then told oh they are allowed as palliative". I replied no

In my initial review I had given 2 stars and below you can read what my initial thoughts were. I feel it is pertinent as I am sure many people have their doubts when initially placing their parents or family members in such care. Well It has now been 3 months and I have changed my review to 4 stars. With the aid of some exceptional nurses, the comraderie between the patients and the drive of the physiotherapists to make her well, as well as the social activities put in place, she has adjusted well and has come to be well taken care of. There are still a few things that had concerned me but with the help of family and some wonderful night nurses we were able to address them. Overall, I do see the benefits and how great the place is. Of course there will be nice nurses and less nice nurses as there are people. The food also, I believe could be better and healthier but its a cost and numbers issue I understand. Overall I am please with her progress and with a few of the nurses. In particular Angelica, shows such humanity, such kindness and such patience with her elderly patients. She is truly a wonderful nurse and caregiver. Thank you for taking wonderful care of my mother. We are looking forward to having her home soon!_____________________________________I'm not quite sure what to think of this place. I also feel like my mom is being neglected. She's older, has a language barrier and she had to go to the bathroom and none of the nurses stopped to ask her if she needed help. Then the one time they were rude when she had to go. I don't find her physio is helping much. Hard to help when it's once a day in the morning and not on weekends. It's like they want to keep her in there. Her air conditioning is on so high that she could get pnemonia, noone has dared turn it down or ask her and she has four blankets on plus one covering the AC. I have an uneasy feeling about the place, from the smell going in to what I've seen so far. Being there I have seen 2 nurses come in to talk to my mom in almost a week that I've been there. They have also looked at me weird when visiting. I seriosuly do not get a good vibe here for elderly mothers. It is true they have many patients but I seriously do not know how the rounds work. I haven even been able to ask questions. I ahve to walk down the shall and stop them mid walking to ask information because I rarely see a nurse come into my mom's room, except to deal with the woman who does have cancer. :( I also noticed there was feedback on a positive comment but no responses to anyone who had unpleasant experiences. That is also odd to me. We were told to feel blessed my mother's in there but I am not seeing much different care than she had at the former hospital. Maybe still too early to tell.

Very disappointed in my Dad's care and potential recovery. Staff spent most of my Dad's therapy time chatting amongst themselves. Not at all the positive experience we were promised.

My dear sister was in a hospice room at Hotel Dieu Shaver hospital from July 23rd to August 5th. I have nothing but praise for the care my sister received from Dr. Arvinte and the hospice staff. They were gentle and kind and they helped my family through the difficult final days of my sister's life.I am grateful for their support and for the tender care given by them to my dying sister. Thank you to the wonderful staff in 2W. My mother's stay was brief, but the attention she received was truly outstanding. Hats off to the staff. You made her last days as comfortable as possible.Thank you again.

Who forces someone to go 3 weeks without a shower or oral care. Takes an hour to help someone to use the toilet, and then denies a referral for equipment in order to have it covered by indigenous status. The requirements for basic human rights are not being met. At least provide the person with the best chances at success once they leave your facility
