The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity (known as the Grey nuns of the cross) mother's house is located at Bruyere and Sussex street across from the Royal Canadian Mint. This order was led by sister Elisabeth Bruyere who established a bilingual (Francophone/ English) school, an orphanage, home for the elderly and hospital in 1845. Sister Brueyer and the grey nuns' devotion to god and betterment of people helped transform lower Bytown from a wild, unsorted lumberjack and fur trader hang out into a more civil, humane place for people to live in.In 2018, Sister Elizabeth's devotion was recognised by Pope Francis who proclaimed her Venerable, a significant step towards her canonization in the Catholic church. The hospital was used to treat and isolate patients who suffered from diseases such as; typhus and malaria. This was important to stop the transmission of infectous diseases especially since many of the early immigrants who passed through this area on their journey to colonize the west were sick due to the long voyage across the Atlantic ocean, poor nutrition and disesase caused by the potato famine.Throughout the years the building has grown adding several attachments to the original structure and also there were several times when reconstruction was needed after fires. When looking at the building closely, this expansion can be seen. For example, the corner wall facing Sussex and Bruyere (above the second level expansion) you can see two unique sundials on the side of the building. These would have been important to local residents to measure time because there were no other public time pieces around. As you move around the exterior of the building complex you can see how the hospital expanded into the former General Hospital of Ottawa. Look for the unusual pathways several floors up that join buildings together. In 1980 the General Hospital moved from Waters and Sussex location to 501 Smyth road and the Bruyere hospital/ residence remains.I recommend that you take a few minutes to look at Mother house while visting Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica and the Royal Mint of Canada so you can appreciate more about Ottawa/ Bytown's heritage. If you like my reviews, photos or videos please give them a thumbs up.
