Nam Dae Moon Rice Cake 南大門

5 stars before 2pm, 1 star after 5pm.DO NOT order ANY mochi from them after 5pm!!! The glutinous skin became all goo-y (i cannot even pick it up, it was like a chunk of white glue attached to the parchment paper) and strawberries inside were all rotten. So gross.But if you visit this place right after they opened, then everything is fresh and tastes good.

We liked the place. Strawberry mochis very good. Besides you can win extra dessert if you’re ordering for 25 dollars and more)

A few of us tried a few mochis for the first time at the Burnaby location. The review is only based on the mochis. The ratings are from 1(worse) to 5 (best) star. All the mochis had a nice smooth texture and were a decent size.Mango mochi – 4 star – filled with fresh mango and light whipped cream. The mango was just ripe. Not overly sweet. Slightly mushy.Durian mochi – 5 star – if you LOVE Durian, you won’t be disappointed. It’s filled with fresh durian (I am not a durian fan but I could smell it even before it’s opened) and light whipped cream. A bit on the pricey side, over $10 with taxes.Purple Sweet Potato & Sweet Red Bean mochi – 3 star – the four of us all agreed it looked prettier than the taste. Blah tasting.The place is located off Imperial and Royal Oak in Burnaby. There are 2 locations on the west coast and one on the east coast of Canada. When you walk in, not all the choices are visible. I am not sure if they sold out early or it because they only offer a limited quantity per day. Note the menu on their website isn’t the same as the one posted at the store. I would have tried the matcha mochi. There are a couple of interesting combinations (salted egg yolk) if you love trying different things. Over the top on the packaging.

At first, it seems unassuming, but the rice cakes are super addicting and I end up coming back here often. Super light and delicious, a joy to have. Staff are friendly as well and even once gave us some tea when we were eating them there. Store is clean and has convenient hours. Price is a little high and they use too much packaging which is a lil wasteful. It is very cute though.

I have been to this location 5 times since I live nearby. I have tried many items, some are amazing while others are so so but I kept coming back for the amazing ones.I really love their taco cakes, they're cute, tasty and light. I'll say that the chocolate is the best then next is the chestnut. I'm not a big fan of their mochi cakes, it's a tad bland than what I like though it seem to be selling well. FYI those are heavy and filling. If you want a savory item, go get the pork floss mini mochi cake. It doesn't stretch much as I expected yet the flavor is great. I also got my hands on the melon cake which reminded me of Japan. I never thought that I could find one over here for such an affordable price. The cream and the fruit were harmonious. This will be a fun surprise for parties.This place has a few tables inside for dining in.

The peanut mochi is legit, lots of peanut topping. Very fresh mochi I like it with my bubble tea gambling sessions. Can't beat that combo. There are so many flavors, I would like to try them all. Nice place with atmosphere, seems busy sometimes. Bubble tea is nearby so just grab a bubble tea and eat this with it. Great combo.

With my friends been there for almost 5 times??? They constantly come out new desserts!! I really love their desserts with sticky rice and red beans etc, most of them tastes not too sweet but purely enjoyable!!kinda both nutrient and tasty, comfort desserts tho!

Very underwhelming. Got the osmanthus rice cake and it’s very bland except for the syrup on top. The texture is not fluffy nor soft. Maybe I have to resteam it? But there’s really no osmanthus flavour beside the syrup.Very pricey for 10$… just some bland stiff rice cake…I know they’re not supposed to sticky like mochi, but I was expecting a lighter texture, between a 松糕and 糯米糕。but it was weird and stiff.It’s IG worthy tho, nice decor and nice staff. But overpriced and underwhelming.UPDATE: finally figured out why the texture is weird. After resteaming and forcing down three more pieces. The bottom 30% was not properly risen. So it had the texture of a gummy muffin… the top 70% part is how it’s supposed to be though - dryer, slightly fluffy. Hope they improve their technique soon!
