This is a family run business. They are so sweet and ready to serve you. They have kept the prices affordable compared to many other places. I would encourage you to go and try them out for breakfast. The food is delicious.

Waited at the door for 15 minutes for seating.the waitress several times asked us to move further and further back so she can stack dirty dishes at the door.she had an attitude and when i asked about the empty booth in the back she sharply responded that it is a staff table.Once seated we waited another 10+ minutes before the waitress came to ask us what we wanted to drink.After taking our orders the waitress went to another table to sit down and held a personal conversation with another customer before giving the cook our orders.3 families that came in after us were served ahead of us, 40 minutes in and we received our coffees only.

Awesome little greasy spoon. Prices were amazing and the service really reminded me of home.No surprises with the food and was happy to just sit and dine there.

This restaurant is a touch of nostalgia with great home made food at good prices. They have daily specials and wonderful home made soups.Best liver and onions too! Pleasant staff. This family-owner diner has been in the heart of Belmont for the past 30 years.

Food made me sick way to greasy. Service was terrible. Waitress never checked on us and then was rude when we asked for ketchup and water. Is extremely cheap but would rather pay more else where.

Before I had even entered the building, I was already receiving excellent service at Checkerboard.My server eagerly welcomed me at the door and was incredibly friendly, getting me seated and making me feel very at home for my entire experience. The diner's design made me feel like I was visiting family, and my server's attitude reinforced that. Server said goodbye to each individual person who left and welcomed each individual person in, knowing all regulars by name. Made great conversation that made for a warm atmosphere.Server was very confident about his cooking abilities which gave me high hopes for the food, and those hopes were met easily. My pancakes were perfectly crisped on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the flavour was great. After eating, the server made it clear that I was welcome to stay for as long as I'd like and we chatted about the area. Even more, when I walked past the Checkerboard later in the day, I was met with recognition and the same friendly service.After just one trip, I already feel like family and I will absolutely be coming back soon. The best breakfast in Kitchener - don't miss this one.

Delicious perfectly cooked excellent quality meals, marvelous friendly fun atmosphere. Breakfasts are excellent! We visited for the first time yesterday and enjoyed it so much we went again this morning. Fabulous homefries, flavorful and perfect. Our next visit will be for lunch! Can't wait.

Cute little place and the food was yummy, the service is also decent and I'm sure it's a place that many hold near and dear as it's a family business that's been around for a long time. They also seem like very nice people and definitely have their regulars but after looking up and seeing the amount of dust in the restaurant on the fake plants I was appalled. When we sat at our table I started sneezing uncontrollably so we started looking around and there it was right above me. Also, the restroom downstairs had a lot of flies and was kept in very very poor condition, broken door, overflowing garbage, sticky floors broken soap dispenser but the flies ughh. After seeing that we quickly paid and left, we will not go back. I understand if a place is old but that does not mean the cleanliness needs to be neglected :(It made me sad because I really wanted to like the place and have it possibly be our little family breakfast spot. The food is also very cheap, I reckon if they raised their prices a bit they can have more income to kind of clean the place up.

Great little restaurant. Kids love the chicken fingers and fries. The western omelet and coffee is not bad either.I hope the checkerboard sticks around. I hate when places like this disappear. What fills their space is never as special or memorable.
