After discovering our surprise pregnancy shortly after moving to Thunder Bay from Alberta, my husband and I were nervous about our experience having a baby so far away from home. However, we were welcomed warmly by the whole team at Maternity Care Midwives. I had a great experience throughout my pregnancy, but the team especially shone during the birth of our daughter. I often hear of women having negative experiences during labor or feeling forgotten" during the recovery period. This was not my experience at all. Not only did I feel heard and supported during labor

My kid got sent to ICU.The service was nice. All of the ladies are easy to get along with. However, you may endup going to labor with the one that you only met once or twice (so what's the point of going with midwives?).The midwife we were with recommended amniotomy (break the water bag to speed up) WITHOUT telling us any risks involved. Guess what, the baby ended up being in OP position (up side down), so we had to do C-section. Would my baby turned around to the correct position if she didn't perform the amniotomy? - The answer was YES, probably. But, she never admitted that she was wrong.I looked it up, and there was a research paper from Cochrane stating that there was no 'speeding up' benefit from amniotomy. Just because it was done for hundred of years did not mean it was the right thing to do for every patient.Long story short, because the mom and the baby were healthy before the labour, they weren't prepared to send us to the doctor for C-section, so my wife had to wait for ANOTHER HOUR after the baby heart beat dropped during labour. Because it took too long, the baby didn't breath when he came out, and got sent to ICU for A MONTH.My recommendation: unless there is a specific reason why you gotta go with midwives, always go with obstetrician. If you go with midwives, always spend time to research before taking their advices. A few of them are really good, but some of them are absolutely horrible.

I had very good care during my pregnancy and labour. I loved the midwives on my team and felt very comfortable. When I developed GD i was referred to an OB as well. I remained with both my midwives and my OB. When it came to my delivery, I wanted my midwives there. My OB was called when i was close to delivering - but she never showed up. instead she sent two students who were going to attempt the delivery. My midwife stepped in and said not a chance. When the baby was delivered the OB made it to the room her remark was oh i didn't think it would go that fast" my midwife had my back and said well we paged you that she was ready. If it wasn't for my midwife - two students would of delivered my baby. Although i understand that students need to learn eventually but at the assistance to the OB

As a nursing student in 2007 I had the pleasure of working with the Maternity Care Midwives of Thunder Bay. This placement had a lasting influence in my nursing experiences throughout the years. These strong intelligent women gave me a good base of maternity care and newborn assessment that has had a large impact on my practice today. I was given an opportunity to observe these Midwives closely with a variety of women from different cultural backgrounds. They were sensitive and knowledgeable with their patient centred care. It was an excellent educational experience and would recommend it to any nursing student planning on working in Labour and Deliver and/or Maternal newborn floors.

We have had the amazing opportunity to work with the entire team at Maternity Care Midwives with all 3 of our children's births. We had our first daughter at the birthing center, the midwives, nurses and entire crew were diligent, informative, caring and all around amazing. The following 2 children were birthed at home. I must say that the professionalism, and all-around care and knowledge of the midwifery team was world class. Their attention to detail and calm demeanor made our home births the most special and personal experiences we could have dreamed of.Forever Grateful!!-The Mantis 5

Had a very good experience with the Midwives. Felt comfortable and knowledgeable throughout my pregnancy, labour, delivery, and post care. My delivery was long and complicated, but thankfully the midwives successfully helped me have a natural birth. The midwives came to my home multiple times post delivery to help me upon request and their help was excellent.
