About the Business

The Illuminated Crowd is an amazing and inspiring sculpture by Raymond Mason in Montreal downtown. It illustrates a group of 65 tightly packed people made from polyester resin. The work shows a rather dark side of humanity.

Very impressive and moving piece of art. Take time to study as there isjust about every human emotion in the faces and posture of the figures.

Wonderful art installation that one can admire on many levels. Funny and sad at the same time. I haven't seen this medium used often.

This was one of the Sites I was wanting to see when I searched for things to do & See in Montreal. Unfortunately it was under Re-hab and I had to get a less conventional view over a wall

Located at 1981, avenue McGill College, Montréal, this sculpture is composed of 65 figures, installed in 1986 by artist Raymond MASON, 1922 - 2010, he was born in Birmingham, England. In 1937 he enters the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts with a scholarship. The Overall size is3,14 m x 8,60 m x 3,20 mTo fit the plaza with high rise building, the artist choosed The Illuminated Crowd to fit the site. He has always felt that given the strict geometrical forms of North American architecture, the sculpture of the human form is needed. The square paned facades of the building are ideally suited to capture and emphasize the undulation of Mason’s present crowd of 65 figures. Thus, the sculpture is in light ochre in color, singing before the blue of the building. The work, prior to being shipped to Canada, was exhibited in the artist’s retrospective at the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, from September to November, 1985.The Illuminated Crowd is the second large crowd sculpted by Raymond Mason. The first, created in 1968, was the climax of all the street scenes with nearly a hundred figures, this earlier work, in bronze, is installed in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.During the holiday season, the McGill College street is lighted up with Christmas decorations, colorful reflection arise on high rise building with reflected panels, it's one of the site needed to visit in downtown Montreal
