If you're looking to be a cat or dog owner, I absolutely recommend adopting an animal from the humane society as opposed to shopping from breeders. There are so many amazing animals from all different age ranges in need of a home. I decided I was ready to adopt a cat of my own, so I sent in an application HSDR with an interest in one of their male cats. They got back to me within an hour or 2 and let me know that cat was being adopted but they had an adorable female kitten in need of a home. We did a pre-screening interview and then we got to come in and meet her (they also accommodated our schedules as best as they could which was awesome) they asked us a bunch of questions to make sure we were prepared for what we were getting into and that we were the right fit for that kitten and then let us have some time with her. We were approved and they made sure they covered everything from food to vaccines. We also had to sign a waiver stating we wouldn't declaw our cat which I appreciated. The adoption fee was much less than what I was prepared to pay as well. Overall, it was a fantastic experience with the humane society and we now have the most amazing and loveable fur child of or own!

We recently adopted our cat from here. The whole process was done over the phone and in person. The staff here are really nice and willing to answer any questions you have. I highly recommend checking the Humane Society for an animal your thinking of adopting.

The humane society is absolutely wonderful! I saw my little Sierra online and put in an application, the next day they called me back! I set an appointment to meet her in the next 2 days, that same day of the meet and greet we took her home! The staff is amazing, friendly and so kind. They answered all our questions and gave us time to as bond with Sierra. We are so happy to have our little Sierra join our family! We love her so much. The transition has been so smooth. Thank You HSDR, you take incredible care of the animals! I highly recommend HSDR to everyone!! Keep up the incredible work.

I adopted my cat here last December! Their form was straightforward to fill out and they give you well-suited options for the right animal that'll fit into your lifestyle and experience with animals. They got back to me within the week I believe and we had a short interview over the phone. I applied to quite a few shelters in the beginning so believe me when I say I prefer Durham Humane Society's process a lot better! We met our shy girl Sarafina (at the time) and she immediately warmed up to us. There was a second brief interview in person and the staff was very kind and helpful. The price was very fair and they were very helpful when I called for advice later on as well! She was spayed and all her shots were updated. Now she goes by Emma (but we all call her meow meow) and she's a wonderful addition to the household! No behavioural issues and is such a sweet little lady!

You're website is awful. I'm trying to adopt a dog from a shelter near me and your website does not have a clear list of the dogs you currently have. And you can't come in to see it's by appointment only. As a result I definitely won't be adopting from this shelter.

Had a great experience adopting my cat Talulah! The staff were informative and kind and let me spend a great deal of time with the cat before deciding whether or not to bring her home. They packed me up with food and meds with explanations about everything. Great after adoption support too!

Beautiful place to adopt an animal. The animals are well taken care of. Very reasonable rates, considering they have all their shots, spayed/neutered and micro chipped. I just adopted a lovely cat.

Made a donation of blankets and toys that my dog won't play with. Hope they make a doggy or kitty happy till they find a home. Friendly staff and easy to drop off.
