Experience with previous owners - good. Sadly, not the case with the new ones, as security doesn’t seem to be a top priority anymore.Since March 2020 they no longer ask tenants to sign in or inform office staff who they are to enter the facility. This raised a genuine concern for us as it suddenly leaves all the units within the B building exposed to anyone who wishes to enter between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day; tenant or not, unmonitored. More concerning is there are no cameras within the building, only some at a few outdoor locations, which does nothing to protect the units within the building from theft during business hours. Additionally, the lockers in the building are outfitted with the cheapest interior door hinges – one locker opposite ours even had their hinge installed upside down. Surprising the pin hasn’t fallen out. Expressed concern about how interior cameras should be installed, and if not, at the very least that doors be outfitted better should this new “open-door” policy continue. Disappointed that they expressed no interest in finding ways to monitor who was entering the building; be it a buzzer system, gate codes etc., no interest in interior cameras (which would be an easy and logical fix), and instead, decided to hang up the phone when asked if their other facility has the same policy. Following new ownership, we experienced annual increases which included 2 rate increases in 1 year, and most recently, notice of a 14% rate increase. Despite this, the only improvements that seem to have been made are painting some exterior doors green and clearing some space out front to make more RV & boat storage for their business. I have never come across another storage facility that would allow the public onto the grounds or into a shared building unmonitored without a code, key, or sign-in/out process.

Rite Storage Risk AssessmentSecurity• The main gate is open and there is currently no check-in procedure so anybody can come and go as they please.• There is minimal camera surveillance• The doors to building B are chained wide open so anybody can walk in. There’s no stopping a thief entering with a stolen vehicle or stolen plate (they’re thieves!) and doing whatever they want for as long as they want. There are no interior security cameras!• The individual security of many of the lockers is dismal at best. Many doors have only 2 hinges which are the cheapest interior hinges available, a thief could pull the hinges in seconds. The hinges are missing screws. The hasps are cheap and not professionally mounted.• I never walked the perimeter but I’m fairly certain it has no security.• When asked about access on a day when the office is closed was told they kept a key under the mat. They didn’t ask if I was a tenant, they just told me.Other Issues• Because of the archaic, manual security protocols and systems, access is only available during daytime business hours while staff is there so if you have a job, you can’t go during the week unlike most other storage facilities which are open till 9 or 10 PM.• They do a very poor job at clearing snow in winter so you’ll need a 4 wheel drive at those times when there’s snow.ConclusionWe were with Mill Bay Self Storage for several years before Rite Storage bought it and although some of these problems existed then, the monthly rates were reflective of the service. Having said that they never allowed access to non-renters. There were more secure systems in place. Since Rite took over, rates have increased 61% with a diminishment in service. The only ‘Improvements’ are an increase in rentable area for vehicles (more money for Rite) and some paint on some doors.If you are storing items that have any value to you I would recommend not using this facility, it’s not worth the risk. Never thought I’d rant and rave about a storage place, but these guys know how to do it the “rite” way. Professional, clean, secure, and the friendliest staff imaginable. We’re going to miss them, if we ever get our storage unit emptied!
