The recent opening of Avril supermarket in Montreal adds a breath of freshness in the neighbourhood. It defines itself as “Supermarché Santé”and somewhat unique concept with natural alternatives.Who says that food shopping has to be a chore? It was a pleasure to roll the shopping cart in between the shelves, where the products were nicely organized. There is an abundance of high quality bio products, at reasonable price points.There is a great selection of gelato that will capture every kids’ (and their parents) attention. A section for their bread and cannot be expressed better than “L’amour du Pain - Artisans de la farine et du bonheur”.Amazing customer service. Not the usual grumpy cashiers that infest our regular supermarkets.Don’t forget to pick up their points card that gets you 1% off your next bill.

Clean and modern but not much in there to buy. What really bothers me it’s the service. The lack of personal make the current one upset but in front of the counter. No hello no thank you no eye contact. I wouldn’t come back here to do my grocery.

There was a time when Avril was competitively priced. It was either the same or slightly more expensive than the large supermarket chains, which made it a great option, worth the detour everything. This is no longer the case. The prices have skyrocketed (adjusting for inflation) to the point that shopping here is not an acceptable value proposition anymore. Will shop here only when necessary, it has become depanneur prices after all.
