Worked there as a welder, no previous experience welding they hired me as a welder trainee. Put me through a 2 week in house training course (unpaid)As soon as I started I realized the training provided was not enough to meet expectations.I was put in turnover, one of the hardest jobs in the place fresh out of school. I had to weld the inside of train cars, everyone else doing my job had been there for 5+ years and had no patience to teach. I asked for an easier position to improve my welding but they told me I couldn't switch until I had 1 year seniority

Although I met many friendly and respectful people during my 7 year tenure at NSC, I wouldn’t suggest working here. The safety culture is severely lacking. I witnessed several coworker accidents. Eye injuries, severe cuts, crushed fingers and trauma from falling objects - some of which were not reported. The factory is loud, dirty and smokey. Safety training is light, procedures are unclear and personnel to enforce them do not exist. Yet, NSC is very quick to temporarily suspend workers who make safety related mistakes. This company is reactive, not proactive. Ultimately NSC’s weak safety culture came to a crescendo in June 2022 after an accident causing a workers death. This was the third death in 21 months. A quick google search will outline the details.Although most union members are passionate about fighting for higher wages and better benefits, the nature of the union meeting felt unfocused and wild. Most meetings I attended saw several members swearing at each other. If the union succeeded at anything, it was the ability to protect lazy or unruly workers. The only person I saw fired from NSC was an employee who was selling drugs. The only noticeable push from the union to prevent people from smoking marijuana in the lunch room, was a reminder notice in the monthly union news letter. While working at NSC it felt as if the CEO either wasn’t aware of how poorly the shop floor was operating, or that he didn’t care. History could make a case for both. The company’s leadership feels slimy. An example: in 2008, after a botched railway car factory startup in Alabama, Greg Aziz (NSC’s current CEO), failed to pay interest on a loan taken from the RSA (Retirement Systems of Alabama). In 2013 he was arrested and charged with securities fraud. One year later, the charges were dismissed after a 21-million-dollar settlement. To sum up, NSC is an old school company in need of a serious overhaul; especially regards to it’s safety standards and job procedures. The work pace is fast, the wages are weak. National Steel Car’s priority’s are misplaced. I would give the company a zero star review if that was an option. Do not work here. One more time for the people in the back… do not work here!

feels like a sinking ship for the workers; the training was moot & unpaidvery dangerous; loud, dark, limited vision & hearingvery unfulfilling work; people seemed unhappy and hive-mindedthis job does not pay enough to afford the living of a single person @ $19/hr, and that's not accounting for layoffs which I was told were becoming more frequentyI don't trust this company

I went there to try to speak to somebody what it's like to work there as a welder. I was parked on the walkway by accident. Lady came up to me and said you're parked in the walkway put her nose up in the air and just kept walking. Why are you reviews so bad? What are you doing to the employees in there?

steel car is the stepping stone for anytype of steel work. I had nothing going for me working at lowes, they gave me a chance with a qa job, even know I wasn't qualified. I built myself up got welding inspecting experience to get my cwb. used that to get a dream job as a inspector for nuclear component replacement. my advice would be use this job to advance your career.

Worst job I will ever have, most unsafe place I’ve ever been. Continuously mislead about everything to do with the job from pay to job security. People will continue to die there with the way it’s run and the higher ups should clearly be investigated for criminal negligence
